Printer online then offline

I own a brother mfc 420 cn, the problem I have is that I can print once then it goes offline never to print again. Once I redo the drivers by uninstalling then reinstalling I then can print once then it goes back offline again. Very frustrating, thinking of buying a new printer and shun brother all together. I'm using windows vista and the printer is networked, any insight would be most helpful, I also tried the firewall and ip address but nothing wrong there

    Thx for the reply,

I have the recent version, supposedly, for vista; wish I had a driver version for you but I can't find it thorugh the properties. Not sure whats going on, everything in the properties settings look to be in order. It's most likely brothers/vistas driver issue, I'll have to send a bug ticket to them and let them hash it out. I know I downloaded it twice on 2 different computers and both do exactly the same thing, prints once then goes offline.

Just for sake of argument would there be any reason for the router to termiate it? In the past if something like this happened (not as severe as now) we would unplug the cable wait a minute or two the hook it back up and it would work. Already tried it this time around and nothing happens even with a hard reset on the router.

Have a Brother MFC, worked fine for several months, then began to get the message that the printer is offline, and I can't find any way to get it online. It may or may not be a coincidence that the problem began just after I used it as a copier for the first time.

My first solotution was to reinstall the printer as a new printer. But that is uncessary. The fix is as easy as changing the IP address the in Port.

The problem is the the IP address for your wirelss is not static. and when it changes, the printer does not recognize the new IP address. When this occurs. go the the printer folder ( in the control panel) and click on 'add new priter'. Then select 'add a network wirless printer . NO NEED TO INSTALL THE PRINTER...you just want to see the IP address.

Note the IP address.

GO to the printer, click on the right mouse and select 'properties'
Click on Port
You will see the current port already highlighted.
Click on ' configure port' and change the IP address under "printer name or IP address.
Click OK.
Problem solved

Good luck.

If your brother printer constantly, no matter what you do to change it, says it is offline you may want to check your firewall settings. I had this problem for almost 3 days and I couldn't figure it out. But then I thought wait, I believe that I may have accidentally blocked it under my firewall settings or whatever program is controlling my firewall (Mcafee, Norton, etc.). So I went to my firewall settings under Mcafee and as I supposed it was blocked. Under program permissions in my Mcafee program I noticed that the Spooler SubSystem App was set to Block. So I unblocked it and set it to Outgoing only and as I predicted it fix my problem. If you are having the same problem check your fire wall settings and make sure the latter program is allowed through your firewall.

Change the IP address on the Brother computer itself. Find out what IP address Windows is trying to use and input THAT address into Brother. You can actually change it. It worked for me!

I have a Brother MFC-495CW which said offline. I reinstalled it and it would print a test page and then show offline. My solution which is working was to add a port and enter the IP address of the printer (found by following the menu/network information on the printer.) I went to printers and faxes in the control panel, double clicked the icon for the printer, double clicked on the printer, clicked printer, clicked properties, clicked ports, clicked add port, clicked TCP/IP, got the port wizard, entered the IP address and named the port (Brother Printer), and finished the wizard. Now it works. I'm not a geek, I just poke around the computer and tried this and voila.

The MFC420CN came out before the release of Vista. You could try the Brother website to see if there are specific drivers for Vista.

Had a similar problem. Had purchased the printer, printed about 20 pages without any problem. Made a couple of copies and then it would not print any longer. It showed the printer offline. Couldn't restart pages or anything. Tried everything I could think of. Then I tried the troubleshooter that came with the printer. It sent me to the Network menu that shows every computer and printer on the network. I found the Brother Printer, right clicked on it, selected the Install option and it installed another printer on my laptop computer. I then selected that one instead of the existing one installed and it started printing.

Hello,

Had the same problem with my mother's MFC and after 4 hours of troubleshooting I fixed it.

My mother's printer was networked through the router. Here was the solution.

1. Go to printers and faxes.
2. Right click and go to properties.
3. Go to ports (for some reason its shows Brother PC-Fax v2)
4. Add new port.
5. Enter the IP address (check the printer menu to find the IP Address ie. 192.168.002.002. To be safe enter 002 instead of 2.)
6. Restart the computer.

Wait a minute or 2 after restart and the printer should now be online.

Hope this helps you guys.

How to Turn Brother 5890cn, 3070cw, 2170w, 9340cdw and j825dw Printer Offline to Online?

The obvious cause of brother printer saying its offline is because it is not set as the default printer on your computer. You can easily change the status of Brother MFC 5890 CN printer offline to online. Under the devices section in your computer check, if it is listed as devices. You must re install the driver from the website. In case, you need to use the Brother Printer offline. Right click on the icon of Brother Printer machine. Then, see what's printing and change it to offline.

How to switch from "offline" status to "online" status

Hi,

I had the same problem with a Brother MFC-6490CW AIO printer. Here is how I resolved it:

Open the printers folder.
Right-click on the Brother printer and display the Properties page
Select the Ports tab.

In my system (Vista Premium), the selected port was a WSD port (whatever that means). Further down the list, there was a TCP/IP port that was obviously created by the Brother installation software. I selected the Brother-created TCP/IP port (which deselected the WSD port), applied the changes, and suddenly my printer was online. No idea what the difference between these two ports is, but I'll stick with the TCP/IP port until further notice.
