If the agitator can be moved freely by hand, you probably have a stripped bell, which is the small plastic dome that the agitator is attached to. Maybe hear a grinding noise in agitation from under the agitator?
It takes a large amount of force to pull the agitator straight off to access the bell, which has one small bolt securing it to the transmission shaft.
Bell is a fairly inexpensive part. Not saying this is your problem, but would check this first, as it is a common repair.
good luck

To remove the front panel insert a putty knife about 3 inches in from the side on each side at the top of the panel, pull out on the top of the front panel while doing this . You will see the main motor and a drain pump motor on the right. If your clothes are setting in the bottom wet and not spun out, only the drain pump motor is running. Clothes should be stuck to the sides of the tub if main motor is working in spin. GE uses two types of main motors, the older had a 120 volt motor and a transmission with a timer control,
the newer(last 5 years about) have some with a dc motor with a board setting on top of the motor and no transmission, electronic board.Wondering if your main motor is working or you are hearing the drain motor only in spin?
