This is the ink counter reset instructions:
1. Service mode: Menu->Scan->Copy->Scan( one at a time in sequence)
2.Select "test mode"
3.Select "(8) ETC
4.Select "(4) EEPROM CLEAR
5.Select "(1) INK COUNT
6. press the OK button
7. Press the STOP/RESET button(returns you to the TEST MODE sub-menu
8. Press the ON/OFF button (which resets the printer).

There you go.

This is great for resetting the counter - and will get your printer working, BUT make an effort to clean the ink absorber pads one sponge left and two pads right. Instructions are before this in this topic. The ones on the right I accessed by pulling the plug when print heads were pausing at left side.

I am unfamiliar with your model and the proper way to proceed, however when taking my own dead printer apart I discovered the "waste ink tank" was nothing more than a large sponge wedged into the bottom of the printer case with some hoses aimed at it. I immagine you could just buy a replacement sponge, although I'm undertain what sensor detects how full it is and if anything else must alo be done to reset it to an "ok" status.

Triangle and ON/OFF switch both flashing. Window reads 'CHECK PRINTER'. What exactly do I check? Window had been reading 'WASTE INK NEARLY FULL' for a fortnight, but I couldn't find out how to deal with...

The waste ink absorber is getting full.
Press the OK button to clear the error.
Printing can be done until the waste ink absorber becomes full. If the waste ink absorber becomes full, please contact your local Service Center for replacement of the absorber and machine maintenance.

The waste ink absorber is a part inside the machine, which absorbs ink used in the cleaning operations, etc. http://support-nz.canon.co.nz/contents/NZ/EN/8000137103.html
