The bobbin thread is sewing loose stitches and jamming the machine. I have re-threaded everything, brushed out the bobbin casing, changed needles, adjusted thread and bobbin tension, and am stuck and frustrated. Please help!

Check the upper tension by lowering the presser foot and pulling on the thread through the needle. You should feel resistance. If not, take a stiff brush and clean out the tension disks/dials removing any loose threads or lint. If upper tension is ok, check bobbin tension by pulling thread through needle plate opening. You should feel resistance. If not, remove bobbin case and brush any loose threads or lint from the case, especially in the tension spring where the thread is snapped into place. You may need to use a sharp needle to dig in between the spring but be careful that you don't damage it.

Make sure thread is not laying across the bobbin when you look down into the plastic slider that covers the top loading bobbin case. The bobbin on mine I observed was loose in the case so that as the machine ran, eventually the bobbin thread would jump out of the stitch finger (the silver piece to the far left of the bobbin case, past the tension slots). I solved this problem and so can you! Take the extra felt spool pin felt in your accessories kit that came with the machine, remove bobbin from case and drop this small felt circle into the bobbin case. Replace bobbin. On the 4423, the bobbin thread goes counter-clockwise and drops into the tension discs, and goes all the back until it falls into the space left of the silver stitch finger. Make sure take up level raised all the way up! Then pull the needle thread toward you until bobbin thread comes all the way up. If you start sewing and you actually can SEE the bobbin thread laying across the bobbin, STOP and tethered because that would mean your thread did not slide all the back behind the silver stitch finger--however, I assure you, if you go one step at a time, you did it correctly! You will be smiling in no time! Why? The felt helps to make the bobbin rest in the correct position to keep it from jumping out of the groove. I hope this helps you.

Primary causes of upper thread breakage:


-- misthreading: pull all the thread off and thread again, using the manual, step by step. Read each step aloud before you do it. (sounds dumb, but helps.) (And make sure you thread the takeup lever!)

-- thread has wrapped itself around a thread guide or spool pin from one of the breaks. Take the spool off the machine before rethreading.

-- bad or damaged needle. Replace with the right size for the fabric, turned correctly (backwards needles skip stitches)

-- dirty machine, especially in the bobbin case area: review cleaning instructions and do it, using brush and vacuum only

-- bad/cheap thread: should not be slubby or break easy. Try another spool.

-- top thread tension too tight. 4 is normal for most fabrics, most stitches.

Tips;

1) do a light cleaning (brush and vacuum) every day you sit down to sew.

2) replace the needle if you hear it hit metal, if you've got a really bad thread jam, if you see it deflect as you sew (for instance, sewing over the side seam on jeans when hemming). Replace every 3-8 hours of actual stitching time anyhow.

3) buy good quality thread

4) when your machine isn't sewing right, stop; take all the thread off of/out of the machine (bobbin out of bobbin case, spool off spool pin) and give it a quick cleaning. Rethread from scratch, carefully. If that doesn't fix it, do it again, then replace needle and rethread one more time, manual in hand (yah, even if you've threaded it 8 million times before). #4 is curative about 98% of the time. The other 2% often requires professional attention.

I would try adjusting the tension on the machine - this sometimes causes the bobbin thread to jam while sewing. Re thread the entire machine including the top thread. Also it is recommended to use new thread as old thread can ball up after time. If no luck I would call the store you purchased the machine from.

That use to concern me too! I thought it signalled a problem, but my bobbin case has always been loose and that was not what was causing my thread and fabric jam. Usually what causes the jam is an incorrectly wound bobbin, wrong needle or old needle, old thread, or a slightly warped bobbin that is hard to see/detect. Change everything out--needle, thread, bobbin...this usually does the trick!

Many machines today have a horizontal thread delivery for the needle thread. Be sure and place the thread spool with its tiny notch on one end (the notch is used to secure the loose thread end when not in use) facing toward the far right side of the spool holder and not facing toward the left side where the thread will be guided off the thread spool into the vertical tension discs and toward the needle. Some times this tiny notch will catch the thread causing undue thread tension on the needle thread. Placing the thread spool facing toward the right seems to help the thread guide off the spool without catching in the tiny notch.

Also hold onto the needle thread and the bobbin thread, giving slight hand tension to both, for the first few stitches you make in your fabric. With the first uptake of the needle, the needle’s thread tail and bobbin tail are drawn down somewhat loosely into the bobbin case and can become tangled and jam if not held onto briefly. Be sure the bobbin thread comes out of the needle plate in the area it is intended to. After winding a new bobbin, it may help to put the bobbin in its bobbin case and just raise the machine needle by hand just enough to allow the needle to bring up the bobbin thread to the top. Give the bobbin thread and needle thread held together a slight tug so that they both lay out behind of or to the side of the needle. If you have left off the needle throat plate for last (for those machines that allow the throat plate to be removed) when placing the throat plate back on the machine, be careful to guide the bobbin thread through the hole or space in the needle throat plate so the bobbin thread lies on top the plate.

Using the right machine needle for the fabric helps too. Generally, ball-point needles work great for knits and sharp-pointed needles for woven fabrics. Using the smallest size needle that makes the best stitch for the type of fabric seems to work well for most fabrics to produce clean even stitches.

Using the best quality thread helps. The bargain-priced threads found piled in sale bins at the fabric store work great for hand sewing but not for machine sewing. Lesser quality thread make lots of fuzz as it passes through the needle and can jam the machine. Many sewing machine repair folks hate the thought of us using a can of compressed air to blow out fuzz from the tiny spaces of the machine, particularly the newest digital electronic machines, but a spritz or two of compressed air in the vertical thread slots that hold the tension discs and in the bobbin case itself, usually can dislodge bits of fuzz from these spaces. Although compressed air is not recommended for a new machine the thought is offered for you to consider for older, mechanical machines.

Here are a couple of things to try.

* Un-thread your machine and remove your bobbin. Clean any loose thread or lint out of your
bobbin case. Re-thread your machine, reinsert and re-thread your bobbin.

* Change your bobbin
There could be a nick along the edge of your bobbin spool that’s catching your thread as you
sew.

* When you start to sew a seam, grasp the upper and bobbin thread tails. Hold them back
and out of the way as you sew your first couple of stitches. This will keep them from getting
caught in your machine.

If it was sewing correctly BEFORE the needle break...why did the needle break in the first place?...and what fixes did you make?
If it sewed properly...what changed?

Cut your upper thread close to the spool...make sure the presser foot is raised and pull the cut off thread section through/out of the machine from the needle area (sewing direction...do not pull the thread backwards!)

Clean out the bobbin area...remove any traces of lint or pieces of thread...look for any broken off needle pieces... brush the bobbin area out....then add a drop of sewing machine oil (but only if your manual says to oil that area).

Remove the needle plate to expose the feed dogs...brush/clean out that area too and add a drop of sewing machine oil...then secure the needle plate back on.
Replace the needle...do it again...yup...some needles arrive bad from the factory. Make sure the needle is inserted and positioned properly. Then thread the machine WITH the presser foot in raised position. (The thread needs to get seated into the upper tensions.)
..with the.presser foot down...thread the new needle.
Oh...and use the correct needle for the thread. (a universal 80/12 is standard).
Thread can cause issues too. Try a different bobbin, or maybe a different spool of thread to see if that makes a difference.
