Sounds like it is a sleep mode problem. Have you tried to re-set it completely? It basically just turns it off and re-boots it.

1. Press and hold down the circular "Home" key beneath the display while simultaneously pressing the silver "Sleep/Wake" button on the top right edge of the unit.
2. Hold the two buttons down for approximately ten seconds. Ignore any messages or images that appear on the screen of your iPod touch and continue holding until the Apple logo appears.

This should reset it like you just turned it off and on again.

SOURCE: i forgot my password to my 8gb ipod touch

Hello.
Welcome to Fixya Community.

You need to restore it with iTunes, but you can't restore an iPod While its Locked With a password, well in order to Force it to Restore you shud put it on Recovery Mode.
Hold down the power and home keys down for about 10 seconds each while plugged into iTunes. When the screen goes black, release the power button but keep holding the home key until itunes says. We have detected an itouch in recovery mode.

From there you can restore as normal via iTunes.
and that will reset you configuration including Your Password.
Thank you For Using Fixya.
Good Luck.

My ipod

The iPod is a portable music player made by Apple. As of early 2011, Apple sells four models: iPod shuffle, iPod classic, iPod nano and iPod touch. If your iPod experiences a problem such as not responding or freezing, you can reset it to see if that takes care of the problem. IPod Shuffle The iPod shuffle is the smallest iPod model, with 2GB of storage.
It has no screen and attaches to your clothing with a clip, making it well suited for exercising while listening to music.
When it doesn't respond, or if the status light is solid red, you can reset it.
Slide the three-way switch left toward the word "Off," covering the green bar. Wait 10 seconds, and then slide the switch back to reveal the green bar to turn it back on.
IPod Classic
The iPod classic has a 160GB hard drive for storing music, videos and pictures.
If it experiences a problem, you can easily reset it.
Slide the "Hold" switch to the "Hold" position and then slide it back.
Press "Menu" and the center button simultaneously on the click wheel and hold them for about six seconds, until Apple's logo appears on the screen.
IPod Nano
Apple's iPod nano has a touch-screen display and comes with 8GB or 16GB of storage, depending on the configuration.
It has a pedometer and an FM radio.
If the iPod nano doesn't respond, reset it.
Press the "Sleep/Wake" button and the "Volume Down" button simultaneously and hold them until the screen gets dark, and then wait a few more seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen, followed by the home screen.
IPod Touch
The iPod touch has a touch-screen display, two cameras for shooting pictures and movies, and Wi-Fi for accessing the Internet. Its capacity ranges from 8GB to 64GB, depending on the configuration.
You can use the iPod touch to send email and make video calls, as well as play games and run applications. If the iPod touch freezes or otherwise isn't working, you can get it running again after resetting it.
Press the "On/Off-Sleep/Wake" button and the "Home" button simultaneously for at least 10 seconds, until Apple's logo appears on the screen.

Reset my ipod 8gb touch screen 4th generation

Perform a straightforward reset procedure on your iPod Touch if you are experiencing issues like freezing, unresponsive apps, delays or other other problems. Carry out a reset if your iPod doesn't respond when you attempt to restart the unit. This type of reset will not erase any content from your iPod Touch.

Locate the "Sleep/Wake" button on the top of the iPod Touch. Press and hold down the "Sleep/Wake" button and the "Home" button simultaneously. Continue to hold both buttons for at least 10 seconds. Release the "Sleep/Wake" button and the "Home" button when the Apple logo appears on the screen, indicating the device has been reset.

When I turn on the ipod it says locked and disabled and connect to itunes! what do I do to unlock and reconnect??

Plug the iPod touch into the computer with the USB Dock connector. Once it is connected to the computer turn off the iPod touch by holding the power button down on the top of the device until you see the "Slide to Power Off" on the screen. Power Off the Device. Once the device is off (and still plugged in) hold down the home button and keep holding it while pressing the power button to turn on the device. Continue holding the home button until you see the screen on the iPod Touch Say "Connect to iTunes" at which point you should launch iTunes on your PC/Mac if it has not already loaded.

We have a black ipod 8GB and haven't used it in a long time because we got iphones the last thing I did to it was just put games on it for my 4 yr. Old and I changed the password I hooked it up to our imac...

Warning, this deletes your songs and videos but will make the ipod work again Make sure your Ipod touch is connected to the computer with the usb cable when doing this. Press the HOME button and the SLEEP/WAKE button at the same time and hold them down. The power off screen may come on but disregard it When the apple logo pops up on the screen release just the SLEEP/WAKE button and continue to hold the HOME button. After several seconds the connect to itunes image will come up. You can release the button and continue Now start itunes. Your device should be recognized as in restore mode and you now just have to click restore. It may take a few minutes but your ipod should be back to factory condition and fully functional. GOOD LUCK
