Imac G5 will not boot up.

I replaced the DVD drive in my imac G5 and it came up with no problem the first time after the drive was installed. It could read the titles to the movie I had in the new drive but it wouldn't play the movie so I decided to reboot and try again. After rebooting it goes as far as the gray screen with the apple in the middle of the screen and the rotating circle below that and then it shuts off after a minute or two. The first time this happened I remembered that I didn't take the DVD out of the drive and thought it may be trying to boot off the DVD drive so I removed the new drive, put the old one back in (with no DVD) and tried to restart. I got the same result. Next I removed the old DVD drive and tried to boot with no DVD drive installed at all and again, I got the same result (gray screen with apple and rotating circle then it shuts off). Does anyone know of something else I can try? Thanks for any help you have to offer.

When you boot up g5 hold down the command button (apple logo) and the letter s at the same time to but the g5 in single user mode. When it boot in single user mode type fsck -f so it can check disk on the hard drive and repair Mac OS X. After it done doing check disk type exit and see if it will boot up regularly.

SOURCE: iMAC G5 Boot problems

This sounds like the HDD hard died. Sometimes you can hit "option" at the startup to see if the HDD is corrupt. If you see a file with a questionmark in it, then you need to reinstall the OS, BUT before doing this, restart it and hold "apple T" it make the HDD and the computer a giant external hardrive. Just get a firewire cable and backup the hard drive onto another system before reinstalling.

If you see a disk icon come up, there is definate directory problems as it still recognises that it has a hard drive. Disc warrior might fix it.

iMac G5's cannot run windows alone, but older software can be purchased like Virtual PC to run windows on that unit.

SOURCE: Keyboard and Mouse don't work anymore

Hi, Sorry you are having problems,
Well Marcelo, the first thing to do in a situation like this is to restart your Mac or even better, shut down and restart. So, if you have done this, and still the keyboard and mouse don't respond, and, as you have mentioned, you have tried the other USB ports on the back of the Mac, it sounds like somehow, unexpectedly, your iMac motherboard got a shock of some kind and it killed the USB controller....
Last thing to try is to unplug the iMac completely of everything and let it sit for 10 minutes and then plug just the keyboard and mouse back in and try to see if that does the trick..
Otherwise, Apple will cover this if it is still under warranty.
Good Luck.

SOURCE: Imac g5 cant log in get grey screen

Hello, this can be either a software or hardware problem,
To know this, please try to repair your hard drive by pressing "cmd - S" at startup, that will take you to single user mode. you will see a black screen with unix lines. Here you type "fsck -f" and hit enter. Wait untill the repair is finnished. If it shows problems then you have a hard disk problem. If not, try to reinstall the system using the DVD, and choose "archive and install" option, to keep your files and settings.

Why does my iMAC 4,2 reject blank DVD-Rs but plays burned DVDs?

Your machine has a DVD-rom drive, but not a DVD-burner. There is a difference.

Basically, you can read and play the DVD's, but the drive is not capable of burning them.

Replace iMac g5 20 hard drive

Hi John
Try reinstalling via your macbook pro but this way round.Put the Leopard Disk into the Macbook and then start the Macbook in Target mode.on the iMac start it up and hold down the Option (or Alt) key then wait.after a short while you will be offered the HD in the MacBook and the DVD. Choose the DVD and see what happens.
What happens when you do it the other war arounds is that you are installing a startup system for the MacBook onto the HD of the G5 and not the system for the G5. The installer uses the firmware of the motherboard that is running the install to select the correct version.
Another issue is that the disk formatting may be wrong. it's unlikely seeing that you used disk utility from the DVD, but it is possible.
Let us know how you get on.

I'm having some problems with my Imac G5. It crashed a long time ago, so i added a new hard drive, and am now attempting to install the OS again. i believe it's 10.3. It will install the first install...

I have to assume that you mean you REPLACED the hard drive, as there is no room for two drives in an iMac.
If I had this machine in my shop, I would start by resetting the SMU (there are several models of iMac G5, each with a different procedure) and then resetting the PRAM at boot by holding down command-option-P-R until I got the boot chime three times. Then I would boot it from an external OS drive and run DiskWarrior over the internal drive to straighten out any file system corruption. Or, if the drive is brand new, I would erase and format it with "write zeroes to all records once" just to verify the drive and map out any bad blocks.
Then I would try the installation again. When the machine rebooted, I would hold down command-V as I heard the boot chime, just to watch the console messages in real time and see what appears at the point of hang, assuming it continues to hang. From that point, I would be able to diagnose more about where to look for the problem.
Thanks for the detailed report by the way. I apologize if my plan of action involves a lot of accessories you don't own, but the fact is you don't have a trivial problem to diagnose here.

G5 keeps powering up for a few mins then switches off?

Thank you for contacting Fixya Support, I am glad to assist.

There are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot this issue:

Try a PMU Reset:
* Turn of your iMac if it is already turned off
* Disconnect all connections to the iMac except the power cord
* Now disconnect the power cord for approximately 20 seconds
* Reconnect just the power cable the keyboard, mouse and power cord, and then power your iMac G5 up.

* Check to see if the iMac boots up normally without power interruption.

* If the iMac G5 shuts off again, try these steps, another recommendation would be to remove all connections including the power cord, and lay the iMac G5 on soft cloth face down and with a philips screwdriver, remove the plate on the bottom of the iMac G5 where your RAM memory is located.
Before removing the RAM however, touch your hand on the metal boot to discharge any static current you carry for approximately 5 seconds.

Now remove each RAM card and then reseat (re-install) each card.

Restore the RAM card cover with your Philips screwdriver, reconnect your power cable, keyboard an
d mouse and turn on your iMac G5.

See if this second procedure helps if the first procedure does not work.

Let me know if this helps.

Regards

Remove drive and try to pull one side of the drive off that will allow to remove card. You may still have to replace the drive if it tried to turn on with the card inserted.

While trying to install OS10.5 and it will attempt to but it freezes, you the Apple booting circle it stops.

Probably the OS 10.5 version your're installing is not compatible or supported by the system motherboard of your computer model Apple Power Mac G5. per my research from Apple website herewith is their solution quote on what applicable OS to install for such model: "Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) and iMac G5 (iSight) models require Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later, you can t install Final Cut Pro 3.x or earlier versions on these computers. Final Cut Pro 3.x and earlier versions are not supported on any computer running Mac OS X 10.4". best regards

Booting an iMac g5 for the first time with out the system disc.

There are several reasons why you could be having this problem. You first need to know a little about the various "flavors" of Apple computers and operating systems.
There are two brands of processors: PowerPC (this is what you have) and Intel (what Apple switched to after your model).
There are also different types of system install disks: Specific Version (this is what would have came with the iMac originally and contains only the drivers for that model). Retail Version contains drivers and "Universal" processor code for all of the supported models and both types of processors.
Intel Macs format their drives differently than PowerPC macs. So, if the used drive was formatted for Intel you wouldn't be able to mount it, if the install disk that was used was Specific Model type rather than Retail type when the system was installed on your used disk, you wouldn't be able to mount it either.
The drive you have must be formatted for PowerPC and system installed from either the Specific Version or Retail install disc in order for you to mount it.
