The same way you convert any other units other than temperature, using the Units menu (2ND 3) and the -> operator (2ND MODE).

As an example, to convert 1.1 atmospheres to mm of mercury:

1.1 2ND 3 2ND Down Down Down Down Down  ENTER 2ND MODE 2ND 3 2ND Down Down Down Down Down Right Down Down Down Down Down ENTER ENTER

You should see 836. _mmHg

How do you display fractions and how do you use the TI89 to solve fraction problems

Hi william_kien,

The Ti 89 solves a lot of fraction problems by being in the right mode and, the use of several commands. One of my first problems here at Fixya was to find a solution for, "How do i convert a decimal answer to fractions prefferably with matrixes."

Here the problem was solved just by being in the EXACT mode.

Another fraction nightmare, so I thought was to solve for, "I want to solve a Binomial Theorem problem!" You have to go to the end of the problem but, I solved it just by the use of the expand command.

The best way to display fraction is in Pretty Print and, in the EXACT mode. Here is a small demonstration of the 3 mode setting in the Ti 89 and, the effect of each to the way a fraction is displayed.

This is a demonstration of the Ti 89 simplifying and, displaying in fractional form in the AUTO mode.

This demonstration of the Ti 89 not even converting in fractional form and, displaying in the APPROX mode.

You should always use parentheses when entering equations or, fractions into the calculator. Pictured just below you can see how the Ti 89 can miss-interpret what is being entered.

oneplusgh_35.jpg
The propFrac command is a great tool to reducing to the simplest form.
propFrac(expression, var). This will return an expression as a
proper expression

Sometime with joining or, combining fractions you have to get the common denominator. As you can see below the comDenom command is a great tool for that.

oneplusgh_38.jpg
The Ti 89's ability to compute fractions is only limited to the ability and, knowledge of the person using it. Even though, it has a tendency of making a not so, mathematically inclined person look like they have been doing them all there life.

I just gave several ways I go about solving and, displaying fractions. The best way to display fraction is in Pretty Print and, in the EXACT mode. Sometimes that isn't even enough and, you have to use parentheses and, commands to do the job.

Ti 89 detected but couldn't get status

Hello,
Here is what the FAQ and Knowledge Base area of the TI site has to say about the problem you are having. Hope it helps.

How do I correct the error message "TI-83 Plus or TI-89 detected, but could not get status" using the TI Connect software for Windows®?

The Operating System (OS) will need to be updated on the TI-83 Plus family or TI-89 calculator in order for the TI Connect software to detect the status. Try the following procedure to install the OS from the TI-83 Plus and TI-89 Boot Screen. Make sure TI Connect 1.6 is installed on the PC.

If using a TI-89 calculator:
• Connect the TI Connectivity cable to the TI-89 calculator and the computer.
• Do not start the TI Connect software.
• Download the TI-89 v2.09 OS onto the PC's desktop.
**Force the TI-89 into the "Boot screen" (see instructions below)**
• "Press I to install..." (press the [9] key).
• Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader.
• Follow the on-screen directions to install OS version 2.09.
The download should begin.
**Steps for Boot Screen:**
• Take one AAA battery out, press and hold down the [APPS] key while reinserting the battery to force device into the Boot Code screen.
• "Press I to install..." will appear.
Once the OS has completed installation, the TI Connect software will be able to detect the TI-89.

Different answer fro my TI-89 AND MY tI-81

Hello,
Your TI81 can only perform numerical calculation: It always give uour numbers. The TI89, a more sophisticated calculator, can of course do numerical calculation, BUT ALSO symbolic ones. You ask it for the derivative of sin(x) and it will give you cos(x).
Anyway, if you want a decimal result for you calculation above one of the numbers must have a decimal point (instead of writing 2PI write 2.PI.

The TI 89 can do exact calculations. But if you want approximate results any number in the sequence of operations must have the mark of a decimal. Numbers without decimal marks are considered integers, Integer numbers with a decimal mark are treated as floating point numbers ( meaning decimal).

Hope it clarifies things for you.
