Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly
If you have a problem I can certainly point you in the right direction. I have been working on Maytags since the late 60's. Even had to fix my own Maytag washer earlier this year :(
The MAYTAG Service manual (PN 56283), Maytag 2 belt washer - is no longer available - This part has been permanently discontinued by the manufacturer and we don't know of any source for the part.

(maybe ebay???)
Replacement parts diagrams of the complete machine are here:

If you descibe your symptoms I am pretty sure we can solve this via good comunications here.

Hi again. After thinking about it... the schematic is USUALLY inside your machine. Remove the 2 Phillips screws on the front panel and pull it from the bottom outward to remove it. Then look on either the front of the outer wash tub or the inside of the front panel itself. When you re-install the front panel you will need to angle the bottom outward again to insert the 2 top lock tabs in the top panel.

There is no reason to can it... Those are some of the most reliable machines on the planet and the parts are readily available in the parts after market.
What are the symptoms?
I.e
1. won't fill
2. won't agitate
3. won't spin
4. spins but does not agititate.
5. Motor does not run at all
6. Fills but does not agitate
7. won't pump out?
I am serious we can fix it. Just need to comunicate. Me I opened my big mouth about Maytags and now mine is an erector set in the kitchen today!!! I'm fixing mine because there is nothing out there as good as what we have for a long life. I still service A606 and A806 units today. (ahem the ones with the internal schematics! ) Your's is just one gerneration up from those. You call as to what you want to do.. personally I would fix it.

Returned mine back to service this morning (belt and motor mount glider set....)
Would still like to get yours going again if I could have a clue as to what the symptoms are. I know we can identify the "failed part(s)" and solve the woes here.

I have an A606... still running ! There is an issue w the spin cycle. It seems to "LOCK UP". The belt is stock & I tried all kinds of dressings, but it always need manual intervention to assist the spin. I THINK that there is an issue with the gearing. ANY IDEAS ???

First thing to do is to remove the fron panel. There are 2 Phillips head screws bottom front that must be removed. Then pull the front panul toward you from the BOTTOM. It will swing out about 30 degrees and then you and ease it down and off. Please note that the exposed area is horribly dangerous with the front panel off when the unit is spinning. The transmission rotates and there is a counter-weight on the transmission that can knock you out or break your arm. Just keep your hands no higher than the center of the motor.winding body. PUSH the motor inward toward the transmission stem amd then pull it back outward to the front left corner of the unit. The motor is supposed to glide in its mount. You should be able to puch the motor in and it should float back out to tension the belt. If the motor is not floating in the mount then the rollers are broken inside the motor mount base. (Note the motor pulley has an allen head lock screw in it that must be removed to get the pulley off to remove the motor AFTER removing the lower motor mount nuts. The part number for the motor mount roller kit is A-5000 You can find it here for under $11.00
If you continue to have problems then the problem is most likely either the brake or the tab in the center of the large drive pulley (center one). I can explain how to troubleshoot if you discover the motor mount is not the problem.
INTERESTING .... I just checked the bottom (main) pulley wheel and it seems to "engage" so I am rulling out a defective break .... for now. The belt is HEAVILY dressed with the standard gooy spray...tried rosin and that didn't work either. I was leaning towards the RADIAL BEARING, so I am soooooooooo glad you responded. I hope it IS the motor rollers and NOT the bearing because I donno if I will be able to replace that bearing without a repair manual. I been keeping this thing running for 30 years but I could sure use a manual.
UPDATE: the motor & mount & rollers & springs appear to be fully functional. I donno what the TAB is you speak of, so lets troubleshoot the main drive pulley, and the transmission. There is just TOO MUCH RESISTANCE. BTW, my DAMPER is CRACKED in 2 places so I may need to replace that and the bearing.

Thanks, but there is no wiring circuit (schematic diagram) in or on the machine.
I know that it is an old machine, and I may have to "can" it, but if I can find a schematic, then I may be able to save it. The problem is the big timer switch that has nearly 20 connections - hard to troubleshoot.
I swapped my timer out & took some pics of the wiring... if that will help. I also still have the elec schrmatics from the old sticker on the back panal.
