are you formatting an extra drive that you put into the computer or the primary HD?
You can format drives multiple ways depending on which drive it is.
Are you formatting and then re-installing an Operating system? If so which OS.

From your info I assume the original HD was bad and you are replacing it with this drive. Formatting the drive will wipe all data from the drive and prepare it for a fresh install of the OS. Put the OS cd into the cdrom drive and change your boot sequence in the BIOS to access the CD drive first. Follow the on screen instructions (dependent on the version of OS you are installing) to format the drive and then install the OS.

You need to hit the DEL key to access the BIOS
Without a cd you won't be able to reload an operating system. I suggest getting one before going any further. You will also need a valid OS key if you wish to install a version of Windows.

Complete formate is done in dos, press F8 when booting up you should get a menu
then select command prompt... type format C:\ where C is the drive you want to format and enter. everything wiped.

Windows also can format before an install if you boot from the windows cd

How to recover lost data's in my computer after i formatted my hard drive

There are applications available that have varying degrees of success in recovering data from formatted hard drives. The bigger problem is whether or not you have written anything else to the drive since formatting it. These applications can recover the partition table and the File Allocation Table if things are pretty much pristine. What ever you do, don't put anything else on the drive you formatted. This will only corrupt things further and make recovery harder. If the data is crucial data, you may be better served getting a data recovery service to do it for you, although this can be very expensive and has no guarantee of success.

This link will take you a listing of many options for recovery. I cannot vouch for any of them.

My glyph harddrive dont show up on my mac why?

If the hard drive was formatted on a PC computer in NTFS file format then the MAC will not recognise this hard drive.
If you want to transfer data between the PC and MAC then you need to format the hard drive with a PC in FAT32 file format. The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard drive

Hai i have transcand stor get 320GB hard disk. my propblem my computer detect the hard disk but when i try to open that it asks "do you want format it?" what shoud i do?.

If the computer is prompting that the drive needs to be formatted, this means either the drive has become currupt (not likely) or that the drive hasn't been formatted or is an unrecognised format

if the hard drive was formatted on a Mac or Linux machine without choose Fat32 format, the drive will be prompted to be formatted under a windows machine

if there is no information on that drive, i'd suggest just formatting it

remember formatting a hard drive removes all information off that hard drive.

My SmartDisk 80 gb FireLite hard drive says it is full but it is empty. What could be the reason for this and how would I format it? I use a Macbook pro. I dont want to have to buy a new external...

You will receive an error message when copying a file larger than 4GB to the hard drive if the drive is formatted FAT32. The FAT32 file system has a file size limitation of 4GB. You may also receive an error when backing up to the hard drive using backup software. To correct this problem you will need to format the drive to NTFS. If you are using Windows ME or 98SE, you will not be able to use NTFS.
There are some products that do not support the NTFS files system or changing their file system. If you own a FlashTrax/FlashTrax XT/FotoChute/PhotoBank/USB FireLite XPress, you cannot change the format of the drive to NTFS. It must be kept as FAT32 in order to operate properly. If you are using SOHO NAS via ethernet, do not format it to NTFS. If you have any questions, please contact technical support before you format the drive.

Warning: Formatting a hard drive erases all data from the drive. Please backup any data prior to formatting the hard drive.
To format to NTFS, open My Computer.
1.Right-click on the Verbatim hard drive, left-click on Format.
2.Select NTFS as the File System.
3.Place a check in Quick Format.
4.Click Start.
Once the format completes, you will be able to copy files larger than 4GB to the hard drive.
