the code you're given is meant to be a one time open network, where you basically reset your phone's network settings. If you buy a cheap PAYG phone from the carphone warehouse, you can use any sim card you want as they're all open phones :)
The default lock/unlock code for samsung is usually the last four digits of your cell number, if she changed the code and forgot it you might have to call your service provider to see if they can reset it for you.
