The issue was caused by software that may have been installed with the option to burn or copy things to and from a disc.

The issue is resolved by the following:

Clicking start.
Typing regedit in the start search box.
Hit enter.
Look on left for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the arrow to the left of it.
Look for SYSTEM.
Click the arrow to the left of it.
Look for CurrentControlSet.
Click the arrow to the left of it.
Look for Control.
Click the arrow to the left of it.
Look for Class.
Click the arrow to the left of it.
Look for the first line of random letters and numbers. Example: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Click on the line itself this time. NOT the arrow.
Look on the right side under the data tab for (value not set).
Keep clicking the down arrow key until it says DVD/CD-ROM drives.
Then look under the name tab for either Upper Filter or Lower Filter or both.
Right on both these if listed (they may not always both be there).
Select delete.
Close windows and restart computer.

hope it helps

Sounds liek you have a driver or filter issue. this is not uncommon. give this a try to remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Testimonial: "Dear Erus- Thanks so much! Sometimes not knowing too much works out. You led me to Microsoft Fix it and that did the trick!"

Dvd registry

Got to Control panel - Administrative Tools - Computer management - device manager.
you should see DVD/CD-ROM DRIVERS... Is there a yellow flag? if so right click and go to properties.
Uninstall the CD ROM and driver.
Now go back to control panel and follow the "add new hardware" prompts When ask "is the device connected"? Answer yes.
Windows will attempt to re-install the device.
If this does not work you may need to replace or use an external device.
replacing the DVD drive is not hard to do yourself and there are youtube clips that can help you.

Inspiron 1300 won't recognize my cd drive anymore

Symptom CD-DVD drive does not show in 'My Computer' nor in the Disk Management Utility. Checking its status in Device Manager it has the yellow ! with the message Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Resolution A quick Google search led me to this registry hack:
  1. Close all open programs
  2. Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
  3. Follow the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  4. This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.
    1. UpperFilters
    2. LowerFilters
    3. UpperFilters.bak
    4. LowerFilters.bak
  5. If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
  6. After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor
  7. Reboot your computer
  8. Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

I was just given a Dell Dimension 3000 by my daughter, who said there was no problems with it. It has a CD-Rom drive and a DVD-RW drive. When I power it up and click on MyComputer, neither of these drives...

They probably can't load because they are loading at the same time and XP can't sort it out.
Remove the cable from the CD ROM and re boot but enter the BIOS and make sure it is no loonger there.
The nachine should load the DVD rom.
You can try adding the CD rom now, it may work but being XP it may grab the wrong driver again and hang up.
Download new drivers from Dell.com
Hope this helps.

My dell inspiron 1521 cd rom player is not working

The driver needs to be reloaded. It may still be in the Dell Utilities Program, the Dell Drivers File, or it can be downloaded from Dell's website. Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware Manager and drop down to CD Rom Devices. Right click on your product and click on drivers/update driver. If your device isn't listed there go to install hardware in control panel. You might want to swap the CD rom unit with a known good one. On three occasions I've had the CD Drivers be OK, but the Windows drivers were corrupted. Had to reload the operating system completely to make it all work again.

Cd-rom will not work

Hello Mike,

My name is ArmyMason. IF you are getting driver requests for you CD-ROM, its because the CD_ROM Drive is broken. I would suggest taking the CD-ROM out and replacing it with a different one to verify my solution. See CD-ROMs should ask for drivers, they should automatically be detected by the Operating System, Driver request for such devices are a normal sign that the device is broken.

Thanks,
ArmyMason

go into device manager and see if your drive is listed or has an exclamation point beside it.if you dont know how to open device manger go to start menu and click help and search device manager.if there is an exclamation point ! click it and it will tell you the problem.you may need to download a new driver or reinstall the old driver. the only other possibility is the drive is dead :(
