Keeps stopping while watching a DVD. At first I thought it was scratches on the DVD, but when I play discs on a different DVD player there's no problem. It is on a level surface too. What could be causing it?

A bad laser diode or quadrant detector in the "Head" you could try a "Clean" with a cleaning product, but my bet is a bad laser .. so common.

Testimonial: "I ended up taking it apart and cleaning the lens and spinner thingy with a cotton swab. I put it back together and it hasn't stopped yet."

My Emerson DVD player says Disc Error Playback feature may not be available on this disc

The error message "Disc Error Playback feature may not be available on this disc" can have a few different causes. Here are some of the most common:
  • The disc is not compatible with the DVD player. Some DVD players are only compatible with certain regions or formats of discs. If the disc you are trying to play is not compatible with your DVD player, you will get this error message.
  • The disc is damaged. If the disc is scratched, dirty, or otherwise damaged, it may not be able to be read by the DVD player.
  • The DVD player is faulty. If the DVD player is faulty, it may not be able to read discs correctly.
Here are some things you can try to fix the problem:
  • Try playing the disc in another DVD player. If the disc plays in another DVD player, then the problem is with your DVD player.
  • Clean the disc. Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the disc. Be careful not to scratch the disc.
  • Format the disc. If the disc is formatted for a different region or format, you may need to format it for your DVD player.
  • Reset the DVD player. If the DVD player is faulty, you may need to reset it.
If you have tried all of these things and you are still getting the error message, then you may need to replace the DVD player.

Every disk that I try to watch on movies shows no disc error message it won't play the movies but it does play musical CDs

There are several possible reasons why your DVD player is not playing movies, but is playing CDs. Here are some steps you can take to try to fix the issue:
  1. Clean the disc: Sometimes, a dirty or scratched disc can cause the "no disc" error message. Try cleaning the disc with a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping from the center outwards. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasives.
  2. Clean the DVD player: A dirty lens or other components in the DVD player can also cause problems with reading discs. Try using a DVD lens cleaning kit to clean the lens, or open up the DVD player and carefully clean any visible dust or debris.
  3. Check the disc format: Make sure that the movies you are trying to play are in a format that is compatible with your DVD player. Some players may not support certain file types, such as Blu-ray discs or region-specific DVDs.
  4. Check the connections: Make sure that all cables and connections are securely plugged in and functioning properly. Try using a different cable or port if possible.
  5. Reset the DVD player: Some DVD players have a reset button or option in the settings menu. Try resetting the player to its default settings and see if that resolves the issue.
If none of these steps work, it's possible that there may be a hardware issue with your DVD player, such as a malfunctioning laser or drive motor. In that case, it may be necessary to take the player to a repair shop or consider purchasing a new one.

Heavily used discs have caused many of the most common DVD player problems, for example, the DVD player reading errors as well as jerky/choppy DVD playback. Take the disc out of the player and visually check if there are any scratches on it, or play the DVD in another DVD player. Before you throw the scratched DVD away and buy a new one, fix the scratched DVD using toothpaste or convert the scratched DVD to digital files to play smoothly on TV/PC.

Still works very well but recently some disks just suddenly stop playing. What could be the reason?

Dirty laser.. scratches on discs..and sometimes laser diodes get weak and then will have issues playing discs. Some NEWER discs are a different format and the player will need a firmware update (connect to internet via Ethernet cable to get updates)

Some of the common causes of this issue can be found below.
  1. Take the disc out of the unit.

    • Verify that the disc is clean and not scratched.

    • If disc does not appear to be clean wipe it with a soft lint free
      cloth.

  2. Try other discs. Verify that they are clean and not scratched.

  3. Unplug the unit for 2-3 minutes.

  4. After plugging the unit back in, try multiple discs to see if they
    work.

  5. If problems persist I would have to say there is something over heating and it cant be fixed or is not worth the cost of fixing

Those discs have a very strong copy protection mechanism to avoid making digital copies on PC systems but some DVD players won't play them because of that, if you have the original movie, download a copy from the internet, burn it to a dvd-r disc and play it. It's perfectly legal because you already bought the movie. The downloaded copies have no copy protection and will play better than the original.
The PHILIPS DVD-Home theater players are specially picky about non-standar disk like the one you're trying to watch.
