Minolta XG-A The function switch on my xg-a (Self-timer, off, on, b.c.) seems stripped and will not work. Is there an easy way to repair this myself, or do I need to get it to a shop?

If the function switch/selector is very loose on the camera body, it may need to go in for repair. There is a plastic collar that the rewind shaft passes through that holds the function switch in place. It will break from age. Otherwise, you may be able to make repairs yourself. You can remove the rewind knob by holding the fork of the rewind shaft with small pliers, (hold it so the flat sides of the fork meet the pliers jaws) and turning the rewind knob counter-clockwise. The function switch is held to the previously mentioned rewind collar by a small plate. There will be two loose pieces, a spring and detent ball). There is another switch plate under the top cover that the function switch mates to. A pin from the function switch fits into a small hole in the underside plate. That plate will go beyond the working range making the hole impossible to see. You might have to relocate it so the hole is seen in the slot before you put the function plate back on.

Have many lens for XG-A what other minolta bodies will they fit

The XG-A, like the other X-series cameras, uses the older Minolta SR lens mount. You're pretty much limited to the SR- and X-series cameras. They will NOT fit the newer Maxxum bodies, for example, which use the newer Minolta AF lens mount.

Does the minolta xg-a have to have batteries to use the view finder? if so, what kind of batteries does it take

The XG-A requires batteries, not just for the viewfinder, but also for the shutter. It uses two alkaline A-76 (or equivalent) or two silver-oxide EPX-76 (or equivalent).

Strange Foggy line across view finder of Minolta XG-A

sounds like liquid damage. take the bottom cover off and see if there is any rust or corrosion. if all is ok and the camera is working, don't worry about it. it has no effect on print quality.
now if you find rust or corrosion your camera is about to become a fancy paper weight. not repairable economically.
