Hi! The bobbin tension rarely needs to be adjusted. First, make sure you're using the appropriate size needle and thread for your fabric (I'd probably use either a 'denim' needle or a universal size 14) and also that the upper thread and bobbin are threaded absolutely correctly. These can throw off the tension! Also, take the time to clean out the bobbin area. That can throw your stitch off also.

If the stitch on the bottom is loose, so that you see the top threads, then the top tension is too loose. If the top stitch is too loose and you see the bobbin threads on top, then the top tension is too tight.

It helps to thread the machine with different color thread on top and in the bobbin, and then stitch an inch or so on the same type of fabric as you're using in your quilt. Check the stitch. If you need to adjust the top tension, make sure the pressure foot is down! Adjust a little, stitch a few inches, and check again. Repeat until you don't see any (or very little) bobbin thread on the top or top thread on the bottom.

If you go through all these steps, and the bobbin thread is still loose (and you've tightened up the top tension), then there is a tiny little screw on the side of the bobbin case that you can use to adjust the bobbin tension. Turn the screw just a little bit (less than a quarter turn), stitch, check, etc. Once the bobbin tension is set, you shouldn't ever have to change it.

Let me know if this helps, ok?

Happy sewing!

I have a pfaff expression 4.0 and can’t find how to change the tension

This machine has an electronic thread tension control. You'll only be able to adjust the tension for the current stitch, until you turn off the machine or change your stitch selection. Press the Setting button and use the Up/Down arrows on the wheel to get the move the setting selection box on the Thread tension line, if needed. Use the Left/Right arrows on the wheel to increase or decrease the tension. Press OK (the center of the wheel) to save this tension. Test the tension on a scrap of your project and repeat the steps until the thread tension is appropriate for the project. Press Info when in the sewing mode to see the current thread tension.

The manual for the Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 (and a couple of other models in the Expression line) is available from Pfaff here: http://www.pfaff.com/SiteMedia/PFAFF/Products/Machines/Support-manuals/expression_2_3_4-manual-EN.pdf?ext=.pdf . See page 2:16 (page 28 of the PDF) for the details. Pages 2:10-2:11 show the buttons for the Expression 4.0.

I hope this helps.

Pfaff quilt expression 4.2 thread tension issue

Thread tension in this machine is set electronically to vary by type of stitch. There is also an alert light pertaining to the bobbin.

The first link also offers a further link to an online guide. That said, as the tension is electronically controlled and if any sort of fine tuning is required, that would likely require a trip to a service center. Hopefully, one of the videos provided by the links above will be helpful

Hi, I have a Pfaff Varimatic 6091. I sewed some 'too thick' fabric, and it has 'broken' my top tension unit. i.e. I can no longer set it at all, and when sewing the thread is all loopy.

If the upper tension unit is in fact broken, you will need to take it for service or find a replacement part.

This may be a shot--remove the upper thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot, rethread from the beginning. Re-try your machine.

Stitches too small

TIP: A general rule of thumb is that if the stitch looks bad on the top it is the bottom tension.
If the stitch looks bad on the bottom it is the upper tension. The upper and lower threads play
tug of war with each other.
Tension
You need correct tension on the top and bottom threads, but you must also have correct tension on
the quilt held between the rails. You should have a small amount of "sag" in your fabric. This allows
enough movement of your quilt layers for the needle to penetrate and make good stitches.
Before you start making adjustments to your machine ask yourself, "What changed?" If your machine
was stitching great and all of a sudden it has loopies on the back or puckers, "What changed?" Did
you just change the bobbin? Did you just lift the take up rail? Did you lower the take up rail after
finishing your last quilt? Did you recently change the needle? Did you just roll the quilt?
If the take up rail with the quilted portion of your quilt is too high, it will result in poor stitch quality. You
need a finger tip space between the quilt and the machine bed. Higher will result in poor stitch
quality, too low and the quilt will create a drag on your machine's movement.
Look at your bobbin, a sloppy wound bobbin will not create a good stitch. Make sure that the threads
on the bobbin are snug and evenly wound. Check to see if there is a piece of lint in the bobbin case

Just bought a brand new Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 and the top thread keeps getting shredded and breaking while doing free motion quilting. I've checked threading diagrams, changed to four different...

this is a known issue with the pfaff.....i have just bought the machine and it has thread uptake issues...thread tension issues and it comes unthreaded by itself often...leaving globs of thread on the bottom stuck in the feed dogs and under the throat plate.....then the stitches are not properly balanced because the tension gets too loose on the bobbin thread....very disappointed to find out it is a known issue with all the viking husqvarna made machines...which are pfaff, janome and viking.....sux.

Free motion quilting skipped stitches, breaking threads

Might be that you need to lower the tensions quite a bit, you'll have to juggle with top and bottom tensions though, and experiment for just this operation with the Sensormatic.
