Tip & How-To about RCA HD52W140 52" Rear Projection Television

HD52W140 White screen with retrace lines then shuts down

This has the ATC311 chassis. I have found that capacitor C14703 has actually been loose on the deflection board and that had caused the set to have a white screen with retrace lines then the set would shutdown. I resolderd this and normal operation was resumed.

Initially the tv would make an arcing sound and lose power. I found CP031 had burned a hole in the board. I ordered the repair kit from Repair World and installed the recomended cap, trans. and diode. Now, the green led power button lights on for 11 sec. then goes out. There is no other reaction from the tv. Can you help diagnose this problem?

That chassis is famous for the CL031 box capacitor burning through the board often if the hole is large enough the entire deflection board may need to be replaced as alot or arching can cause a surge to run through the deflection circuits, So replaceing the deflection board as a unit may be the best bet.

smelled smoke and hot wires, tv went off and never came back on again. opened back and found only one small part looked burned out, ( broken and a little brown on the board.) Part number R14705.

Thats a 27K 1/2 watt Carbon Composition resistor 5% tolerance. You got deflection issues so a replacement resistor will most likely fail unless you discover whaich componenet on the deflection board caused the resistor to burn. The deflection boards have been discontinued for your model which has the ATC321 chassis. But you can get a remanufactured ATC321 deflection board from www.tvrepairworld.com

Tries to come on three times, then nothin'

Hello, there are at least a couple of areas that could be causing this situation, but the most common is located in the deflection board, this board is located to the left of the service area as you remove the back cover. The most common failures are bugled or inflated electrolytic capacitors and loose solder joints. Another problem area is the power supply which is located to the rear of the chassis or main circuits assembly, look for inflated electrolytic capacitors.

my r.c.a d52w20 rear projection shuts on and off by itself.

Hello james,

The problem happens to be a capacitor. your TV uses the ITC222 Thomson chassis and it has a flaw in which CP150, CP140, and CP120 dries out and then explodes or becomes bloated and causes the problem you are reporting. Here is a URL to get the schematic daiagram:
http://www.eserviceinfo.com/downloadsm/3692/Thomson_ITC222.html

Once you have the schematic, the actual component is on the Deflection board (the one on your right hand side facing the back of the set. The component is behind a heat sink with a transistor on it. Now make sure you find all three capacitors (the two other are on the same deflection board).

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

RCA R52WH74 (ITC222A Chassis)

no the board that has the FL231 on is the ITC222 deflection board. The other board is above the chassis in a seperate frame that runs across the set the convergence power supply is the board on the left above the board where the fL231 is. Yes the ITC222 and ITC222A are the same chassis. As for the service manual that site should have the service manual under the thomson category as the ITC 222 chassis is actually a thomson chassis made for RCA.
