When the door to the microwave is shut the light comes on and the fan starts running. It doesn't heat. The front panel seems to work fine, I can put in cooking power and time, but when I push the start button it stays the way it was before with the light on and the fan running. The turntable is not turning.
Suggestions as to what the problem might be? I can do simple repairs, but nothing really major.

This failure mode just happened to me but I have a GE CVM1790 model. There are three switches that get depressed when the door shuts. If the bottom switch does not work then replace the switch. In my case, all the switches were working but the bottom switch was not getting fully depressed when the door was closed. I tried adjusting the switch assembly to lift it higher, but that also did not work. I then noticed that the bottom plastic arm on the door that depresses the switch was loose. I removed the trim on the inside of the door (easily pried off) and noticed the plastic locking assembly (one piece connecting top and bottom locking arms was broken. I used some gorilla glue and all is working again.
I see this all the time. In all likelihood the mangnetron has failed, or perhaps even the Power Supply. or a fault that is shutting the system down for safety reasons You need to have it serviced by a reputable service centre/man.
Ensure you get a firm "Quote" before proceeding, and remember these days the cost of repair can equal or exceed the price of a new one.
