Just received from a Ebay seller NIB Ryobi tile say with P104 battery. The battery is dead, as if it has a bad internal connection. It will not charge and the power level indicator has zero indication when the test button is depressed. Any tricks to disassemble the unit in order to check it out.

After looking at the manual for your charger, it looks like most of the Ryobi chargers like the P113, P114, P117, P118 will charge your battery. The connector on the battery looks the same as the P103 and P104 used here in the U.S.

Ryobi troubleshooting

The motor may have overheated and burned open. Use a multimeter to check resistance across the battery contacts in the tool with the switch closed. If it reads open, the motor has failed.

Ryobi batteries P103 (2) or P104

The physical differences between two models of Ryobi batteries is:
- The P103 (Part Number 130429008) is a 1.5 Amp/Hour (a measure of how long a battery lasts on a charge) battery. If totally discharged it takes about 15-20 minutes to charge back to full. It is lighter than the P104 because it has half the cells inside. Lighter, quicker to recharge, quicker to discharge, shorter lifespan.
- The P104 (Part Number 130429017) is a 3.0 Amp/Hour battery. It takes about 30-35 minutes to charge it to full if fully discharged. Slightly heavier, longer time to discharge & recharge, longer lifespan.
Considerations:
- No difference between batteries in the performance of your tools.
- The number of times you discharge and recharge a battery determines a batteries lifespan. That's why most manuals will tell you to fully discharge a battery before putting it on a charger.
- If you only have one battery you cannot use your tools while it is recharging. On big projects you have to have two batteries.
- The weight difference between batteries is negligable unless you are working with the tool in your hand for extended periods.

My P104 18.0v LI-ION will not take a full charge it has been this way since new

I can't belive this you are the forth person in the last three days that is haveing a problem with these batterys the same problem with the lithium-ion RYOBI combo pack batterys. People are saying they won't hold more then 5 volts and they all got them at christmas. There has to be a big problem with the battery. Although there is no warranty on the battery it self there is a warrany on faulty workmanship and i think you may have to get in line i think this will be a big recall so file now good luck

What Ryobi batteries p103 or p104 will a battery charger that came with my p100 batteries charge? Or will the charger work with these batteries?

If you have a P100 NiCad battery, the charger for that will not charge the new Lithium Ion P103 or P104 batteries. You need a specialised Ryobi Lithium Ion battery charger like this one

The battery will power your equipment for 30 to 45 minutes, that is normal. What you're thinking of is the lifespan of a lithium battery. It with your battery will last 10 times longer than a regular NiCad battery. So you will be able to charge the battery and use it Hundreds of times before the Battery Life is depleted. Sounds like it's working as designed

New Ryobi 18v lithium battery goes dead after a couple of seconds. Is there any solution other than returning it?

No, just return it, for the money they should give you one that works. It is common to get a defective Ryobi 18v lithium battery. I've had 2 out of 7 purchased that wouldn't hold a charge. But when you get a good one they work awesome!
