On your memory card there is a little piece of plastic that slides across into the write protect mode slide it back and it should work.

If this is a Canon Rebel XS there is no memory card in a 35mm film camera If this is a Rebel XSi then generally this error is caused by the memory card lock switch here is a diagram to show the correct orientation of this switch

make sure the little switch on the side of the memory card is not in the wrong position. I believe this write protects it and cannot be erased or formatted accidently or even on purpose.

can mean that the memory card is locked. take out the memory card and check for a lock slide at the sides of the card that you can adjust to a lock and unlock position, then test the card again.

What sort of memory card is it?  can you remove it and install it in a card reader directly on your pc?  What is trhe phone?
