It may be a loose ribbon cable going from battery compartment to main circuit board. THey have tendency to work loose.

dont use windows media player. first of all download http://www.sony-asia.com/support/download/271132/product/nwz-e436f/modelfirst
this is their media manager and use tht.

on the back of the mp3 it should have a reset button on it. press it and try to turn it on.
( it wont erase anything)

Make sure the hold/lock is not activated.
