Yes, the printer can be fixed, but you'll pay $50 to $100 to a qualified technician, i.e., a _bad_ investment, when a new printer is in that same price-range.
Do some "research", to find which new EPSON printer will take the same print-cartridges that you just have purchased. Or, try to sell those cartridges on 'www.UsedEveryWhere.com', or donate them to a local non-profit agency.
If the current prointer you have lacks the functions you seek in a printer then by all meens buy one that does meet your needs, However typically what needs to be replaced when you get the "Parts nearing the end of their lifespan" error, your print head is getting old, and the cost of a replacement varies depending on the make or model of your printer. Its worth investigating.
Every printer has a life expectancy/ number of papers it can print in its lifetime. Your has gone beyond that. It's cheaper to buy a new one than to try to fix it.
You will need to get it serviced at an authorized Epson Repair shop as the parts that are at the end of service life are not user servicable. With the price of printers today it would be cheaper to buy a new one with updated technology than to try and have this one refurbished. Hope this helps.
Did you ever find a solution. I was away for a month and just tried to use my epson photo R1800 and the same thing happened to me....flashing lights and a "service required" note. Before I left it worked fine.
