MY PRINTER HAS BEEN PRINTING COLOR PICTURES JUST FINE. THEN WHEN I WENT TO BLACK AND WHITE THE PRINTING IS SO FAINT THAT I CANNOT READ THE CONTENTS AFTER PRINTING. BOTH INK CARTIAGES ARE FULL. PRIOR TO PRINTING NUMEROUS PICTURES BY OPTION OF BLACK AND WHITE WORKED PERFECTLY. WHAT IS CAUSING THE BLACK INK TO BEE SO FAINT I CAN NOLONGER READ THE TEXT AFTER PRINTING?
There is a known problem with premature failure of the printhead. I called Kodak support at 1-800-421-6699. They will go through a short procedure with you, and then should offer to replace the print head free of charge. After I called (no wait, and an native English speaking operator), I received the replacement in two days.
I have discovered something which seems to say more about the nature of this problem, and provides a partial solution.
Trying for weeks to print black text without success, I have now tried to print out a page of typing that has a black and white photo pasted into it. The text in question does not print, but the photo does. However the dark parts of the photo print out very light grey and the light parts print out as black. In other words the printer is producing the document as a negative, so that the original black text disappears.
Unfortunately, however, when I type something into a new document and then change the 'color' of the text to white the printer does not recognize it. But if I change the color of the text to grey it prints it out in a lightish grey. Experiment with this!
Anyway, it shows that the problem is not with the ink cartridges but seems to be something to do with the printer's software. Something for Kodak to look at? Would somebody tell them, please!
To complicate "Solution #3" from me, it occurs to me that the grey output I am getting could actually be coming from the color ink cartridge rather than the black one. And I was exaggerating when I said that the light parts of a black and white photo photo print out black. They print out grey, whereas the black bits come out white. Sorry to add to the confusion!Â
I've been having the same issues. The printer prints black and white scanned text from printer itself. However, when printing black and white text from the computer to the printer, black and white does not appear. Color does. This is definitely a software issue. This problem occurred RIGHT after I initiated a Kodak software update. The update installed a glitched software onto the printer itself. I want Kodak to either fix the glitch or send me a new printer. Grrrr.

Calling Kodak at the following number 1-800-421-6699 and provide the agent with the following reference id: PHC01
This is the print head carriage circuit board that has shorted and they will replace the unit free of charge in 5-8 buisness days... I have two Kodak printers, the 5500 and the 5300, both have had this same problem and where replaced in a timely manor by Kodak
I called 180 Kodak on Monday.
We decided it's a printhead problem.
It's now Friday and the printhead has arived in SK, Canada.
This is obviously a known issue as it was a pretty quick determination.
My printer is not printing. the paper comes out like it is, but nothing is there. I put a new black cartridge in, but it did not resolve this issue. Please let me know what to do.
Indeed, I had exactly the same issue. no black printing. (some docs print because the color is not pure black) I called Kodak and they are sending out a new print head. You'll need the Service # from the inside of the printer. And they'll send you the print head for free.
You need to take it a couple steps further after your test print. Sounds like your print heads need cleaning or your cartridge may need aligning. It's best to do this each time you install a new cartridge. get more information and help from here .
Thanks to Bob2. My printer is doing the same thing. Called Kodak and new print heads or on the way. Thank you very much.
I contacted the support department who said to update the firmware. I had the latest version already. They then asked to calibrate the printer. Did that..print demo. NO JOY!! Still no black.
They said they woudl escalate the problem and be back in touch in 24 hours. Said they would also send new cartridges and the escalation team would most likely reccommend a new print head - They said they would also send new cartridges- Waiting for them now...
Couldn't wait that long as important deadline..
I followed the last poster (mtman1313) instructions for cleaning manually. I used a baby wipe and then a piece of very damp tissue to clean the head area. Put the head back in and it told me it was a new print head.
I then printed a demo sheet - But the problem remains... :(
Looks like I'll have to convert all my documents to print in another colour.
I had the same problem and the print head had to be replaced! Call Kodak and get a new one.
Manually cleaning the printhead isnt difficult and could solve your problem. You need distilled or de-ionized water, tap water might work but i dont recomend it. You need a lint free cloth, dont use paper towels or anything that will leave material behind that will clogg the nozzls (a clean soft tshit should work) . Heating the water might help. Remove the printhead look at the nozzles on the buttom. you should see 6 lines in a yellow area. you want to wipe with these lines not accross them. do not scrub or use circular motion. Wet the cloth arean your going to wipe with well. put some pressure but dont break it and wipe a few times. you can also soak the nozzles a bit just only in very shallow water just enough to touch the nozzles do not submerge the whole printhead. you can also google manually cleaning inkjet printheads just use your best judgement some things people do to clean a printhead might damage them. If after manual cleaning and using the built in cleaning the prints still dont come out right call kodak and request a new printhead.

Hi there.
It could be the chip in the cartridge... faulty for printing?

Yes I have ran the printhead cleaning and it did not solve the problem so since the ink is full I would appreciate your telling me the steps to take to manually clean the printhead. thanks, judi
Our 5300 printed black and color fine until recently. The black is not coming out after MANY repeated head cleanings. We bought a brand new cartridge but it didn't seem to help.
Heads up Kodak Executives. Your reputation is going down the tubes every day I have this problem. I've been pleased with your products until this now. I recommend you solve this problem before I start spreading the word to other folks about this printer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have had my printer two months and the last 2 weeks I have not been able to print in black. I have cleaned the print head numerous times and even bought new ink cartridges, no luck. Frustrated and shocked that a Kodak product could have such a problem.
PRINTER SEEMS TO WORKING BUT WONT PRINT BLACK
My pictures print fine too, printer is so faint i can't see words at all. I to have cleaned and done everything to fix it is there a recall on this printer?? I have cleaned the print head many times and nothing still.
Color is fine, but black and white is very faint. Both cartridges are full.
I put in new ink cartridges and now I do not get items printed in black.
1. Printer will only print in very light grey...and in some cases from the internet will not print some of the text on the page. Like this page for instance. The only part printing is the text in light blue. An attempt at the graphic which is undistinguishable.
2. Have changed both ink cartridges.
3. Removed print head and cleaned and still is the same.
4. My printer has not been used that much and this really sucks.
5. Now it will not print in color either.
6. ANSWERS PLEASE, THIS IS TRULY UNSATISFACTORY.
I'm having the same problem. Color prints fine but black is light and fades away. I cleaned the printerhead and calibrated the printer with no luck. The printer is only a year and a half old.(guess I should have stuck with HP)
We have the SAME problem! Color does ok but black and white doesn't print anymore. We're on our third print head!
Same issue- no black, very faint....new ink cartridges
color printing comes out blue & yellow no black or red spent a fortune on cartridges
i am getting same problem
Same problem--printer was great and all of sudden no black ink document printing. We now must type word documents in blue in order to print them. Yep--did all the print head cleaning and replacement--does not resolve the problem. Color photos still print great--including black!?
WHAT'S UP KODAK??
Chris M.
Same problem. Can't do my Christmas letter this year. Printhead replaced and nothing changed. Went to Kodak web site and told this is something that I can't fix by myself and that I need to call direct to speak with someone. Anyone done this yet?
I replaced the printer head several months ago and now I have the same problem again!
not printing clear, ink well not empty, what should I do, how
do I find the code to clean heads?
Very same problem is occurring to my printer. The black will not work at all now when at 1st it was just faint. This is the 2nd printer I have had this problem with. I love the printer but Kodak needs to correct this problem because I have read several comment on this issue and feel it is the responsibility of the company to find a fix. The customer purchase your product in mostly because of the name.
This problem is also mine. The steps for Kodak seem to be the following...
Change Printer Cartridges
Update Firmware
New Printhead
Update Firmware
???
I am curious about this post...
"Calling Kodak at the following number 1-800-421-6699 and provide the agent with the following reference id: PHC01

I am curious as to whether or not this will be Kodak's next step in the hoop jumping. I am now up to a fatal error after replacing the print head. Everyone's posts have been informative...
My printer won't print with the black cartridge and the color cartridge isn't a true color. What can I do to get the black cartridge to print.
my 5300 wont print text its one year old the black is so light i can't see it
I cleaned the print heads using the deep clean feature. I wasted a bunch of ink! Then I used the diagnostic feature on kodak's web site, It determined I needed a print head which they sent at no charge. I haven't re[placed it yet.
my photos come out with all the darkast areas almost white , like they are covered in snow, my printer prints documents fine.
I had the same problem. Replaced my black cartridge which had run out, and could barely see anything printed in black. Called in and after several attempts at cleaning print head, (and a total waste of ink - used 1/2 cartridge color) tech finally decided that the printhead needed replacing. I rec'd one at no cost, and replaced it - works fine again.
This is obviously a major defect in their hardware, unfortunate, as it is a great printer apart from that issue.
Is black faint when you print on plain paper or on photo paper or both? There is a photo black and a text black in in the printer. Either way it sounds like the nozzles dried up. Try using the printhead cleaning in the software maintenance or press the menu button on the printer and scroll down to printhead cleaning and run it from there see if it improves. If not manual cleaning may need to be done. If you need help with manually cleaning the printhead respond to this request and I will post some instructions.
my printer is a Kodak 5250 and I first used the ink that came with the printer. when it ran out I went and purchased a black cartridge that was supposed to be comparable to the Kodak brand. I ran the test page and it came out with a big smear of black ink across it.I returned that and exchanged it for the Kodak that I needed. I inserted that into the printer and it doesn't print the black right yet. Looked inside and saw black ink splashed inside the place where you insert the cartridge. can you help me with a fix?
