Distinctive Ring
basicsDistinctive Ring service is an
optional service available from many telephone companies. The
Distinctive Ring service permits you to assign more than one telephone
number to the same telephone line. Distinctive Ring allows you to use a
single phone line for both voice and fax calls. You can assign a unique
phone number and ring pattern for incoming fax calls. When a fax comes
in, each telephone number makes a distinctive ringing sound, such as a
single ring, double ring, or triple ring.
NOTE:
The Distinctive Ring Service
is the name HP and others use to describe this feature. Distinctive Ring
is also known as:
The Distinctive Ring Service allows the HP
product to work similarly to a dedicated fax line.
If you connect an HP fax product and a telephone to one telephone line,
you can assign one telephone number for fax calls and another for voice
calls.
NOTE:
You cannot
send or receive faxes when the phone line is in use. Even if the HP fax
product has a separate telephone number, it is still sharing the same
phone line.

SOURCE: HP Photosmart all in one. Trouble with Telephone & fax rings
Hi Natalie,
Did you follow the instructions in your HP Photosmart 3110 AIO manual, starting on page 30? I'll assume that you set-up your printer using Case E or Case H, where you share a voice line with your fax service. If so, then you should set the AUTO ANSWER option to OFF per the instructions on page 50.
If you have an answering machine, then you should set up the printer using Case I, whereby you will set the AUTO ANSWER option to ON and then set the the RINGS TO ANSWER to a number greater than the number of rings for your answering machine to pick up.
I hope this helps. If you have another configuration that I haven't answered (i.e. other than Case E, H, or I), please reply back with your exact set-up.
Or if you have lost the manual, you can get it from this website:

If you found this answer useful, I would appreciate you leaving feedback.
Thanks,
Lee

Set the number of rings before answering
If you turn on the Auto Answer setting, you can specify how many rings occur before
incoming calls are automatically answered.
The Rings to Answer setting is important if you have an answering machine on the
same phone line as the device, because you want the answering machine to answer
the phone before the device does. The number of rings to answer for the device
should be greater than the number of rings to answer for the answering machine.
For example, set your answering machine to a low number of rings and the device to
answer in the maximum number of rings. (The maximum number of rings varies by
country/region.) In this setup, the answering machine answers the call and the device
monitors the line. If the device detects fax tones, it receives the fax. If the call is a
voice call, the answering machine records the incoming message.
To set the number of rings before answering via the control panel
1. Press Setup.
2. Press Basic Fax Setup, and then press Rings to Answer.
3. Enter the appropriate number of rings by using the keypad, or press the left or right
arrow button to change the number of rings.
4. Press OK to accept the setting.
