After you've finished recording press 'finalize' the recorder will then get ready for finalizing and then a countdown time will appear in the display eg '1:20' once this appears press 'play' and the recorder will start to finalize and the digits will count down to zero, once this has finished, your disc is finalized.

Hi,
It sounds like you haven't followed the last step to the burning procedure. All you need to do once you've completed burning your disc is to Finalize the disc. Read below why you need to finalize as well as the steps to follow in order to finalize the disc.
Hope this helps ;)
How to Finalize Finalizing is writing the TOC (table of contents) on a disc so a CD player can recognize the number of tracks, the total time for each track, and their location on the disc. A recorded disc must be finalized to playback on a standard CD player. Once finalized a CD-R disc can be played on CD players that support CD-R playback. CD-RW discs can only be played on CD players that support CD-RW playback. Consult your CD player owner's manual to confirm supported formats. Finalizing is necessary to: • be able to play a recorded CD-R or CD-RW disc on a CD player • prevent further recording on a disc • avoid erasing tracks on a CD-RW disc • record text information onto a disc you record Notes: • A finalized CD-R disc can never be recorded onto again. • A finalized CD-RW disc can be unfinalized for more recording. • The CDR300 can play back unfinalized CD-R or CD-RW discs. • SYNC REC+FINAL mode automatically finalizes.
Here are the steps in order to Finalize your disk
1 Push Stop. The display shows the number of tracks and their total playing time. 2 Push FINALIZE. FINALIZE is displayed for about 3 seconds.

Cd Burner says its burning CD but after finished the cd will not play in anything

Sounds like the CDs need to be finalized. Also, if you are burning MP3s, make sure your radio is compatible with MP3s.

When I try to burn a redbook cd...the machine just keeps finalizing...never finishes. I could let it run all day and it won't burn a cd. I eventually have to abort.

Either the HD is bad or you will need to reinstall the O.S. /firmware.
the firmware is avail on the alesis site

try the O.S first. The o.s will fix any software related issues
if not , then try switching out the CD drives with a known working one. or try to burn a standard cd. if it works for the standard cd, then the problem is software related.

hope this helps.

Won't read mp3 and wma cds

The discs were not "finalized" or "closed" - place the cd's back on your computer cd-rom drive and search the help file of your CD burning software and search for "closing disc" or "finalizing disc." Some programs will allow you to close or finalize after you have already burned them, but others (Sony SoundForge is one exmaple) will not allow it - you may have to re-burn the discs and select the option that says "close disc after finishing" (this option is usually left unchecked by default, because closing or finalizing a disc prevents you from adding any new information to the disc).
