Dear ched13889,

Are you sure that the USB drivers are installed correctly? If so, there may be somthing wrong with the connection between the Shuffle and the dock's jack. If this doesn't help, there may be somthing wrong with the connections. Try phoning your retailer.

To reset iPod shuffle:
  1. Disconnect iPod shuffle from the computer (if connected).
  2. Move the switch on the iPod shuffle to the OFF position. Note that when iPod shuffle is off, the green stripe by the switch is not visible. ht1655_1.gif ht1655_2.gif ht1655b_3.gif ht1655--4th_shuffle-001-en.png
    1st generation 2nd generation 3rd generation 4th generation
  3. Wait five seconds. For iPod shuffle (3rd and 4th generation), wait ten seconds.
  4. Move the switch to the play in order or the shuffle position. The green stripe will be visible in either position. For iPod shuffle (2nd and 4th generation), slide the power switch on (and you can see the green stripe).

How to use an ipod shuffle charge

Use iPod Reset Utility to restore the following iPod models back to their factory settings when iTunes is unable to do so. The process completely erases all music and data and reinstalls the iPod software version listed below:
  • iPod shuffle (1st generation) - iPod Software version 1.1.5
  • iPod shuffle (2nd generation) - iPod Software version 1.0.4
download here
http://support.apple.com/downloads/iPod_Reset_Utility_1_0_4_for_Windows
then install..
follow these instructions..
Using iPod Reset Utility
  1. Quit all running applications on your computer.
  2. Open iPod Reset Utility.
  3. Connect iPod to a USB port on your computer. Do not connect iPod to a USB port on your keyboard, or other non-powered USB hub.
  4. Click the Reset button.
  5. If prompted, enter an administrator name and password. Notice: Do not disconnect iPod during the reset process.
  6. When complete, quit iPod Reset Utility and open iTunes to load music onto iPod.

My ipod shuffle 2nd generation does not mount as a disk drive my pc sees it as an unknown device therefore it will not be recognised by itunes how do i get music on my new ipod shuffle??

Is it new?
On the iphone if you hold (and keep holding) the home button as you connect both ends of the firewire/usb this triggers a complete reinstall, without needing to connect to Itunes.

Ipod is not recognized by itunes. it wont play or charge it just blinks 4 times when i plug it in

  1. The iPod reset utility will reset your iPod shuffle back to it's factory settings. It works for the following shuffles: iPod shuffle (1st Generation) - iPod Software version 1.1.5, iPod shuffle (2nd Generation) - iPod Software version 1.0.3
The reset utility will fix the following issues.
    1. The iPod won't play music and can't be restored using iTunes
    2. iTunes won't see the iPod but you can see it under "My Computer" in windows or under Apple System Profiler on a Mac.
    3. iPod shuffle (1st Generation) is identified as a device in "Recovery mode." iPod shuffle (2nd Generation) is identified as a "USB DFU device."
  2. You have to have administrator privileges to run the restore software and it will wipe out all the information on the iPod (including all your music) and install factory software back onto it.
System requirements are Mac OS X 10.3.9, or later, Win2k with sp4, Win XP, this won't work on Vista.
Download the file for the program here:
    MAC
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodresetutility102formac.html
    Windows
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodresetutility102forwindows.html
  3. Install the software onto your computer, plug your iPod into the USB port and run the reset program, it will ask for your permission to reset the iPod, answer yes and the process will proceed. After finishing the reset procedure then use iTunes or whatever software is used to access your iPod and load your music. Enjoy your toy!

I am not sure about the 1st generation but the 2nd generation definitely charges via the USB connection. If you don't hear the music its because there are no songs on your device. When you initially add songs, they go to the Library in iTunes, not the Shuffle. Just drag and drop your songs from the "Library" to your "Device" in iTunes and then you'll notice them get sync'd with the Shuffle.
