Is there a way tell if the printer is "broken" or it just needs new fresh ink, wihtout spending $$ on new cartridges? Thanks in advance!

First run the CLEAN HEADS and see if that helps. If you don't use your printer at least once a week the Print Heads get dried out and will not allow the ink to pass through to the paper.
Go to control Panel and click on Printess. Then when the window comes up, CLICK on Properties TAB and then in the next window, CLICK on CLEANING.
You may have to replace your PRINT HEAD if that doesn't work.
Hope this is of some help. Bud

My DeskJet 712C will not print anything when I try printing in color, it will, however, print with just black when I set it to do so. How do I get it to print in color, too?

Blocked print head nozzles
Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent blocked print head nozzles. You may have blocked print head nozzles.
Try the printer maintenance to clear the printer nozzles.
After several deep cleaning attempts and there is no improvements in the print then a new print head is required. Also try - Removing the print head, run it under hot water for 2 mins, then let soak for 10 min. then used a can of compressed air to dry thoroughly. It may fix the blocked nozzles.
A new print head maybe expensive and it maybe more cost effective to purchase a new printer.

My hp 712c printer prints only the pink band when I run a color test. I have replaced the original cartridge. Any ideas about the cause and solution.

The cause is either:
* clogged ink-jets not allowing yellow & blue ink to move from the ink-cartridge onto the paper;
* busted electronics inside the printer, causing the ink-jets to not "spray" at all.

Use the software to try a "print-head-cleaning" cycle.
If that fails to improve things, it's time to replace the printer.

But the info on how to get it to work if having issues if also found on that page.

HP Deskjet 712c Printer will not print in black & white

you need to check the head of the printer, im sure is bad, it depends how old is the printer but the head on the printer goes bad if printer has not been used for long time or if you left the old empty cartridge seating inside for a lont time, you can do a head check on the settings of the printer and also do an alignment thank you

HP Deskjet 712c prints only blank

I had the same problem and what worked for me was to make a PDF and then check the box "print color as black" I only say this is a fix because I was desperate. I realize this is a time consuming workaround. also if you are going to do this make sure that your printer settings are for Color but then the print color as black box is checked. hope that helps.....

Only prints red

It sounds as if the printhead needs cleaning. There should be an option on your printer for doing this. You may need to run this a number of times. If that fails to work, then its possible that ink has clogged the jets. Time to replace it.
