From the info I found, this appears to be an older mechanical machine. If so, most likely it is seizing due to lack of frequent oiling and cleaning. AVOID using the machine until you get the issue resolved as it could damage the motor. The following may be helpful in getting your machine back to working again. Lack of oil can affect many different moving parts in the machine. It just happens that it has first appeared with the zig-zag capability of your machine. Apparently, manufacturers did not anticipate these machines would last so long--they assumed the machines would be periodically maintained by a professional technician who would regularly oil. As a result, many of these great machines have been sidelined simply for lack of oil... but they can be brought back to life.

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

This is a machine with the motor and belts hidden inside right? Your belt is broke. While you can replace yourself... it's likely that it threw the machine out of time... and it is very easy to through the machine out yourself when you replace the belt yourself (ha! ask me know I know!)

If everything works when you use the hand wheel... take it in and have the belt replaced.

check out the machine info plate, it is usually near the power inlet on the side below the flywheel. Hopefully if it is legible there will be a 2 digit number which is the Elna model. There is also the very early model called "1" or Grasshopper, this is a bright green beauty with a knee control. And a model after that with a six digit model code.

If you are in the USA, you may want to contact the White Sewing Center, www.whitesewingcenter.com, he is the guru for all things early Swiss Elna including stocks of very old spares and manuals.

My other suggestion is that you join the Yahoo newsgroup called Elna Heirlooms, this is a fantastic group of vintage Elna owners who share lots of information and are very knowledgeable. Just go to www.yahoo.com, join up, then go to Groups and search for "Elna Heirlooms". The moderator will need to approve you as a member initially, then you can peruse messages and check out the files, this is such a great source of information on these beautifully engineered machines.

The Swiss Elnas included several models called "Supermatic" and SU so it is good to identify your machine by the model number.

If you look at the Identification plate on the machine it should have a 2 digit model code and a serial number.

However, one of the very early machines was called a 722010.

If you browse www.whitesewingcenter.com you may find your manual available there. He is the Swiss Elna guru for old parts and accessories.

I would suggest that you check the machine's id plate on the side by the power inlet and look for a 2 digit code, this is the model number.

Then check out www.sewingpartsonline.com or www.sewusa.com and see if they have the manual for sale. You probably won't find free downloads.

Other option is to join the Yahoo group "Elna Heirlooms", just start at www.yahoo.com, register, then go to "Groups" and search for this name. This news group shares information on the Swiss Elnas and many of the members are very knowledgable. I've learnt so much from them and you may find what you are looking for there.
