No Video only sound with Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1, tried everything, HELP!!!!

It's my birthday today and received this receiver and Toshiba A3 HD DVD player to replace my older onkyo that is not HDMI.
I couldn't wait to hook it all up and get the HDMI HD audio/video capabilities. We followed the instructions to a tee and with 3 intelligent people trying to figure this out, WE COULDN"T...... only sound, no video and getting this message....STB failed, HDMI....use component cables.
Using monster cables, one very expensive, thick cable and the other is slightly smaller, 1m, 4ft basic monster, and an off brand HDMI cable. When we hook the cables directly from the cable box to the TV it works fine but when we go directly through the receiver, we loose the video, only sound.
I called up TWC and they said to call onkyo since they don't support this problem. Figures, Time Warner does nothing for you, but knows how to charge you for everything and raise their prices.
I will be calling Onkyo tomorrow, they are closed now and hopefully they have some answers. I went to their site and they said I don't need to use this firmware update for this receiver. All up to date.
I hope its not the cables, because I have already invested thousands in this little venture of upgrading with a new LCD TV, receiver, DVD player and cables and an HDMI cable box. I refuse to invest anymore money which I don't have. Please help Thanks

    I hope I don't have a faulty receiver. I bought it off of ebay from a reputable seller and hate to go and send it back (if he even takes items back) I hope you can figure something else out. I am so upset now. I was so hoping I would be able to enjoy my birthday gifts from me. Ha, Ha.

    I know if I call Onkyo, they will say I have to upgrade cables, hope not, and will find fault with the cable company, and visa versa, they always pass the buck to someone else.

    I see others are having the same problem as I am, so maybe its something with this model. I researched this for months before I purchased a receiver and even CNET recommended it, so I went with it.

    A very unhappy ending to what should have been a nice day.

    We Aquarians never give up, as stubborn as we are. LOL

    Thank you so much for your help. I did read the manual on pp 47 and 48 and have the monitor to yes, but still nothing.

    I am hoping it is not a faulty receiver or need more expensive cables.

    Why is it that upgrading always gives you problems, is there nothing that goes smoothly? So you don't need any other cables of any kind if using HDMI, no composite cables, A/V cables, etc? I know when I had my older model, I had to use them even though my TV and cable box was HD, but of course the receiver was NOT HDMI and now it is. Just looking for some solutions. I am on the phone waiting for an Onkyo representative to answer the phone, but I think I am going to wait a long time.

    Been on the phone all day with JVC, Onkyo, Toshiba, Time Warner Cable and I am literally mentally and physically exhausted and ready to kill someone (not to sound nasty, but it has taken a toll on me) So far the end game is this......my TWC cable box is NOT HDPC compliant, meaning it does not handshake with the receiver. Couldn't anyone tell me this to begin with when I was doing my research. Couldn't onkyo make sure you had a compliant cable box or alert consumers that this is necessary when purchasing this receiver?

    According to TWC, this Samsung cable box is their latest and greatest, Ha, Ha, when everyone and their uncle is keeping up with technology TWC is not. So on Thursday they are bringing me a new cable box, although it will be the same Samsung brand and I seriously doubt it will not work. But maybe the technician can do something I am not.

    I was on the phone mostly with Onkyo and had 4 separate techs taking me through the whole process and they all came to the same conclusion. I do now have the capability to play my Toshiba HD DVD player with surround sound, but can only play my TV with regular sound, no surround since the cable box is not hooked up to the receiver and TV to give me that capability.

    I have 1 HDMI cable running from the TV to the cable box and one running from the TV to the receiver and one more running from the DVD player to the receiver. They even suggested using component cables which I have excellent Monster cables, but even that didn't help the situation and still got no picture through the cable box. Don't understand why I wouldn't get any video capabilities with component cables, that remains a mystery.

    So, the way it stands now is I can watch the DVD (although I don't see any improvements in the quality before HDMI and HD was used. I am disappointed. I feel I have wasted hundreds of dollars on a system I can't fully use. Nothing seems compatible.

    P.S. on a different note, I read today that Toshiba is doing away with their DVD players and will be going with Blu-Ray. When I told this to Toshiba, they insisted this is a FALSE rumor and not to believe it. They will continue fully supporting HD DVD players for the foreseeable future. I was relieved to hear that.

    Am I the only one having these issues? if anyone else has been through this, can they post what their solution was.

    Came back in to tell you how I solved the problem with the help of the cable man,, LOL

    He told me that all of Time Warner's HDMI boxes are HDCP compliant with these newer receivers BUT to protect themselves monetarily, they make it so they aren't compatible in the sense that you just can't hook up a HDMI cable and everything works because then with the 605 and other higher end models, you would be able to record the pay for view and HD movies on cable (seems these receivers can do that) and that the cable company would lose money.

    So he told me that the only way around this so everyone is happy is to connect component cables from the receiver to the cable box (instead of the HDMI) to the receiver and the HDMI directly to the TV. Now with it hooked up this way, I have sound and video and everyone is happy.

    So if you are having the same problem as I DID, try hooking it up this way, and to tell you the truth, there is NO difference in the picture quality. We tried it both ways somehow (he did it) and there was really not a difference.

    Now off to buy a Blu-ray player and sell my Toshiba HD player that I had no idea was a mistake since it seems that Blu-ray has won the HD war. Now let's hope these idiots out there in the technology world doesn't come up with something else that will make Blu-rays obsolete. I just can't keep up. It's sick already.

Hey have a wicked happy birthday... It is mine today too!!! If someone born of Aquarius, on the same day as I cant fix it, then it probably cant be fixed!!

Sounds like you have a faulty receiver, but am going to read the manual as you already have and see if I can add my 2 cents worth... don't give up yet :)

    I know you may already have covered this ground,have you checked page 47 of the manual... it references the HDMI monitor... if this has been selected to "no" then video will be converted to and directed to the composite video connections on the amp, not the HDMI out connection. This would present the no video problem you have. The "first time setup" procedures in the manual are the important ones in this day of digital multiplatforming high performance sound and vision mastery:)

How to connect Sony dvd player to onkyo TX-8511 receiver

The TX-8511 is an older AV receiver with only composite video inputs. Your DVD player may not provide this type of output as it's not capable of HD video. If your dvd player has a composite output with a Red, White & Yellow set of outputs, that will connect into the Video 2 inputs on the receiver. Your TV will need to connect up to the Video2 or Monitor output. You'll need a set of composite video cables with the red-white & yellow RCA type plugs.

I have a TX SR 606. I have the unit connected with a HDMI cable to my TV. At times it will take several minutes to get a signal to the TV when I turn on HD format. I am also using HDMI from the DVD player...

This is one of many reasons I recommend against routing ANY video through a receiver if the TV/ monitor has enough connections for all of the video sources.

Bypass the receiver andsee what happens, then isolate a cause.

The posabilities is power amplifier on your reciever is bad,
replays reciever or repair it.More likely this is IC amplifier located on the main board of the reciever

A/V Signal Outout through Onkyo TX-SR705

Are you trying to record cable programming with your DVD recorder? If so, you might want to try using component cable as HDMI does have a copy protection circuit that might be preventing your recorder from receiving the image. Just try to connect the cable box component (RED/GREEN/BLUE) cable to your DVD recorder. If that doesn't work, then try to change everything over to component cables. HDMI is a great cable to use but it the only required to display 1080p images and the only current source that uses 1080p is a bluray player. Everything else, such as your cable box and DVD recorder is 1080i and component cables are perfect for it.

HDMI SOUND

True HD can only work with HDMI interface and is only available on some newer HD DVDs. Check the DVD to see if the True HD encoding is available.

Could well be the quality of your cables. if you have high end cables the consult a service agent. if you have the cables that came with the products, go and get some better ones.

Onkyo tx-sr604 help

You said you tried hooking the HDMI up directly from the TV to each component, and that worked. How is it usually hooked up - through some kind of switch? I'm not completely understanding your setup here.
