Our HE3 front loading washing machine is making a knocking sounds as if there were base balls inside during spin cycle.
Ours started knocking several months ago and then progressed to a high pitched sound when in the spin cycle. I manually turned the drum and heard and felt a bearing roughness. I lifted the drum assembly and felt a fair amount of play, which I think the initial knocking noise came from. On the sears web site a new rear drum mount cost 293.00. Today we went and bought a LG model wm2455hw at Home depot, on sale until 2/20/08. I couldn't see paying to repair a machine that only lasted four years.

Hey, sorry to hear about your troubles mine were solved fairly easily. I got advise from a fellow through epinions.com. He advise me to take the back cover off and tighten the 15/16" nut in the center of the pulley and it worked! It took me all of 20 minutes to do this. No more knocking.
Yes, our washer is knocking too. The belt seems to be off the pulley and the nut that holds the pulley on doesn't seem to tighten anymore. I can't believe a $1000 washer would go bad after less than 5 years. What total crap they sell today.
Continue to have a knocking sound when in spin cycle. Replace the worn pulley on the back and shimmed up the pulley to be tight and centered. Still makes the noise. Checked to see if the bearing seemed to have any "play" as I turned the drum from behind and it did not seem to grind or have any extra play.
Still trying to make the machine run quieter and was wondering what the issue might be?
