Press the enter key and hold it while you press the menu button. That will make the align message go away, but if just one color is missing it will always fail the alignment. The paper size is chosen in control panel and printer properties, printing preferences.
The print head is the carriage that holds the ink cartridges and has tiny nozzles on the bottom that spray the ink on your paper. The nozzles have to be aimed (aligned) either automatically, or in WinXP with the following manual process:
1 Left click on the start button 2 Open "Printers and faxes" on the Start menu. 3 Find your printer on the printer list and right click on it once. 4 Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu. 5 Click on the "Maintenance" tab at the top of the new window.
A selection page for all sorts of upkeep items is then shown. Manual alignment of the print head is one of the choices.

Problem
The following error message appears on the LCD panel on top of the printer after you insert a cartridge:
Press enter to align cartridges
. You press
Enter
, but the error message does not go away. The printer will not print.
Solution
To bypass the cartridge alignment, do the following:
Press and hold the
Setup
button.
Press the
Options
button. The printer should be ready to print.
If the print quality is unacceptable after bypassing alignment, follow the steps below until the error is corrected.
Step 1 - Check the paper
Make
sure the printer is loaded with clean, unused, white paper. If the
paper is not feeding properly, check the paper path. For information
about how to do that, see the instructions under "If the paper does not
feed correctly" at the end of this document.
Step 2 - Remove and inspect the cartridges
NOTE:
The "problem" cartridge is the cartridge indicated by the error message.
Turn on the unit, then open the print carriage access door. The print carriage moves to the center of the unit.
Press down lightly on the top of the ink cartridge latch and pull the lower section of the latch out to release the cartridge.
