My Grandparents bought a 40-something inch Polaroid LCD TV in 2008 and just recently a large black band appears horizontally near the bottom of the screen but through the lower third of the picture. You can see over half of the top of the screen and maybe 2-3 inches below the band. It is almost like a change in aspect ratio band but misplaced on the screen. It doesn't have a top and bottom bar or bars on the side but one very large one that is 6-8 inches tall that goes through the picture. It is an intermittent but frequent problem that if you change the aspect ratio and cycle through all the options, it goes away but may come back again in a few minutes. Sometimes it goes away and does not come back at all until you turn the tv off and back on again. They do not have repair options being in a small town. Any suggestions for why this is happening? I am guessing the model - closest I can find.

The black box is a text box for closed captioning. Some stations send the signal which turns on the box while not actually broadcasting any text. Go into your setup menu and turn off closed captioning, or at least change it to a different mode. The easiest option is to restore factory presets.

disconnect the x and y sustain boards from the power supply. then check the flex connector to the screen and reseat them. check connections on c boards at bottom and screen connectors. reconnect the power supply only after all flex cables are reconnected or charge from supply will burn flex cables. if still preent replace correcsponding c board. if still no fix replace panel.

check your LCD inverter maybe there is loss connection or some parts damage from inverter.
