SOURCE: Magnovox MWR20V6 will not begin recording when it should.
This is more a work-around than a solution, as the unit is failing to function normally; however, having the identical problem I observed that the unit is failing to power on at 2:00 minutes before beginning recording, a necessary step to record to DVD.
My work-around is the following:
1) Set up the timer, inputting necessary date, time, etc. as normal. With the unit still powered on, start the timed recording mode by pressing timer set, as normal. You will see the red clock icon and the DVD logo iluminate on the VFD.
2) Press the Standby-On power button. This will power the unit on in VCR mode. You should at this time be unable to switch from VCR to DVD mode since the DVD is still in timer mode. LEAVE THE UNIT POWERED ON in this manner. The timer will function and the DVD will record normally.
I have no clue why my unit suddenly forgot how to power up on its own in order to record to DVD. If anyone has an answer for that one please post!

SOURCE: Toshiba dr7 DVD recorder. Using timer recording
Hi, thanks for posting your Question.. This problem might be can be due to a writing error problem on bad media. What's more, this error is 'non-critical', and can easily be cleared in most cases by the user.
Press 'DISPLAY' button (should be on remote); this should clear it. Also check to make sure the recordable DVD media is 4x - 8x write speed. Recommended media brand: Verbatim DVD-R/RW if you can get it, or Kodak will work.
Discard any discs you previously used in this machine which may have triggered the error.
Or you can try the below step.
Unplug the unit from the wall AC outlet for two hours to reset .. If it doesn't reset, Turn on unit, select Hold channel up and play buttons on front of the unit for 5 seconds..Unit should reinitialize and work better..
Good luck to you..

Good day!!!
E40 means "Some portion has not been recorded because of program overlapping. Recording time did not start at start time."
Don't feel bad or dumb. Virtually everyone (including me) made the same
mistake you did. The owner's manual does explain the entire process
thoroughly and correctly, on pages 30-31 under TIMER RECORDING.
Using the TIMER button on the remote control permits you to build a list
of up to (8) future video programming event(s) you wish to record. You
performed that part of the process exactly right. However, you merely
failed to place the unit in the STANDBY MODE by pressing the TIMER SET
button on the remote control, which is the FINAL step in the process!
Placing the unit in STANDBY MODE effectively powers it down, just as if
you'd turned it OFF as you normally do. The difference being, when the
unit's in STANDBY MODE it'll automatically turn itself ON, tune to the
correct channel and begin recording at the start-time specified, in the
entry you made using the TIMER menu. Certainly, it would've been far
more intuitive if they'd named the button STANDBY instead of TIMER SET.
If you want to use your DVDR
in the meanwhile to view a DVD or VHS movie, just press the TIMER SET
button on the remote control again to take it out of STANDBY mode. Just
be darn sure to reinsert a BLANK DVD back in the tray and place the unit back in STANDBY MODE again, once you're done.
While overseas products (such as those made in China) are dazzlingly low
in cost (due to slave labor wages) we must remember the documentation's
written by people whose native language and culture is NOT the same as
ours. This becomes painfully apparent upon having to decipher the
documentation accompanying such products.
