If the drives' filing system is NTFS, then you will need to change it to either FAT32, if you would still like to use it on a Windows PC, or HFS+

I have a mac and a new iogmega external drive, 500g. I cannot move any files onto the iomega or save them. I get messages such as "that file does not exist" to iomega can't be modified,...

Hello,
With the drive plugged in, going into your Applications ' Utilities ' Disk Utility Select the drive and press Verify Disk, Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. If you don't have anything on the drive right now, try formatting it with the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system from the Disk Utility.
If that doesn't work the drive may be damaged. If you have another PC / Mac, trying plugging it in and see if it works there. If the drive is under 1 year old it should still be under warrantee, in which you could return it / RMA and get a new one sent back from the manufacture.

Describe your external hard drive iomega MDHD500 Problem: I've just bought a MAC OSX computer which doesn't recognise my iomega hard drive (used on a PC) is there a way to fix this?

Are there any files on the disk-drive that you want to keep?
If so, connect it to a PC, and copy those files.

If not, connect it to the Mac, and allow the Mac to 'format' the drive, to initialize it for use on the Mac.

I am trying to trasfer a large amount of files from my macbook to a dell laptop. The mac will recognize the drive and i am able to backup and save files onto it, however when i plug the drive into the...

The problem most likely is the Dell does not recognize the MAC file format (HPFS), but the MAC will recognize the PC's FAT 32 file system.
First format the USB mass storage device using the Dell, format this device in FAT 32 not in NTFS because the MAC can read and write/copy PC format files but the Dell/PC cannot read MAC format files.
Then Safely remove this device, connect it to the MAC and copy the files onto this drive. When you connect this device to the Dell, you will be able to see the files.
Have fun.

Iomega 1TB HD Works on iMac but not on Windows Laptop?

as the mac has a diffreent format to a pc you cannot connect up the drive to a pc because it simply wont recodnise it. the best way is to network the 2 computers together then alow file sharing on the mac and searcc with windows through the network to find the drive. then copy them across the network to your pc. this will then reformat the files to PC files at they hit your PC

I am trying to add more files to my iomega hard drive and it says "iomega cannot be modified" Why can't I add more files?

Your external hard drive is formatted NTFS. This is a Microsoft proprietary hard drive format which is why Mac does not have a driver to write to it out of the box. You have two options:

1) You can either make sure to buy Western Digital products which all come formatted FAT32 which is writable by Mac's and PC's (There is a 2GB file limitation, a single file can not be larger than 2GB with FAT32)

2) Install a NTFS driver. The NTFS-3g driver is stable and I have been using it since beginning of 2009 with no problems, you can download it here (http://www.ntfs-3g.org)

Cannot copy files to Iomega 500 GB external hard drive.

It depends on how you formatted the the drive.
If it was formatted FAT it will work on both Mac and PC.
If you formatted to HFS+ (the native mac format) then it will only work on a mac.

I have an iomega exteranl hardrive whic i can access on my Mac laptop, but when i connect the drive to my my windows based laptop, it's not accessable

I not a big mac expert but it is probably to do with the way your portable drive is formatted. Windows pc's will recognize drives formatted as FAT32 or NTFS. Mac's will also recognize these formats. If the disk was originally formatted with a mac format like HFS is won't be recognisable to windows. Connect it to your mack and look for the Fike System Type. You could back up any files you have on the portabe device to your mac hard drive then format the drive on a windows machine. Start with a NTFS partition and see if your mac can read and write files to it. If not then try again with fa32. Once you have it going you can put your saved files back. Hope this helps. Let me know how you go.
