Problem: Firmware upgrade posted by Rhoda20001 on 02/16/2008
I downloaded the firmware upgrade to my computer and now I need to open the router config to download it to the router. I can't open the ie after entering the ip address. I'm stuck and frustrated...need help.

The installation CD will not go any to any other steps till the firmware is installed but the router config page will not open to download the firmware.

  • Rhoda20001 Feb 17, 2008

Just as it seemed impossible to ever figure out my wireless problem, bam it came to me as this has happened to me before. The installation CD was corrupted and couldn't complete the download. So I went to the routers main page and loaded a copy to my harddrive then opened the install set-up. Everything downloaded perfect, I have been wireless ever since. Thanks to all who help.

Most router config pages can be opened at http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 . Better confirmation can be made if you provide the router model. You can also double check the address by going to start > run, typing cmd then hitting enter. In the command window that pops up, type ipconfig /all and press enter again. In the information it returns, you will see a Default Gateway address. That address should lead to your router if you put it in your browser.

Upgrade firmware on NETGEAR router.

Many a times, it is required that you upgrade the firmware on your NETGEAR for it to function properly and be equipped with the latest updates and feature offered by NETGEAR.

I have listed the specific steps which are required to upgrade firmware on most of the NETGEAR

A. Open the router page using the following way:

1. Connect a computer to the router using any one of the 4 available ports.
2. Open the browser(Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox).
3. Access the router, usually with http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://www.routerlogin.com.
4. Login to the router with the Username as "admin" and Password as "password" (please note that the username and password is case sensitive. In case you have changed the password for router login then you need to use that one).

B. Visit the following link to download the latest firmware.

http://kb.netgear.com/app/

Type the model make of your NETGEAR router and it will show you the download page for that specific product.

C. Please follow the steps to upload the firmware of the router:

1. Open the router page using the steps as mentioned under step A.
2. Under Maintenance, click router Upgrade.
3. Click Browse and locate the upgrade file.
4. Click Upload.
5. Wait for the router to reboot.
6. Click on 'Logout' (at the bottom of the list) from left menu.

It is recommended that you reset and then reconfigure your router for the firmware to upload properly.

NOTE: Please upgrade the firmware on a computer connected wired to your router. Upgrading firmware on a wireless computer may cause your router to malfunction and can lead your router to be in an unusable state.

These steps will succesfully allow you to upgrade firmware on your NETGEAR router.

Firmware upgrade

Firmware Upgrade Instructions:
Please download and unzip the firmware file to computer's local hard drive and then follow the instructions in the "readme.txt" file to upgrade the firmware.

Warning : -
Firmware upgrade failure may permanently damage the unit and causing it not to function. If the issues in the "Release Note" do not address the problem you are experiencing, please do not upgrade the firmware. Never upgrade the firmware using a wireless connection. Firmware upgrade will reset the Router to factory default state (all current settings will be replaced by default settings). When necessary, please write down the Router's current settings before performing the firmware upgrade. Please do not load the previously saved Router "configuration file" to the new firmware.

How to upgrade the firmware on a BEFSR41

Firmware upgrades may erase all previous settings to your router's configuration. Before upgrading your firmware, make sure to record your settings. 1. Unplug and disconnect all computers from the router except for one. This computer must be plugged into the router directly. There can be no other network activity on the router during the upgrade, so be sure to power off all other computers. 2. Go to http://www.linksys.com/download 3. Select the model number of the Linksys router you have (BEFSR41) as firmware upgrades vary by model and version. You can find your router version underneath your router after the model number. For example, ?BEFSR41 Ver. 3?. 4. Click the Downloads for this Product button. 5. Once you arrive on the download page, click the Firmware button. 6. After the firmware page opens, click the link that says ?Click here to download the latest firmware...? and download the firmware file to your computer. 7. Once you download the firmware Zip file, unzip it. If you do not have an unzipping program, go to http://www.winzip.com and download WinZip, which will allow you to unzip the file. 8. After unzipping the firmware files, one of them will be called TFTP.EXE. Double click on it. 9. When the ?Upgrade Firmware? window opens, you will have three prompts. The ?Server? field is for the IP address of your router; by default this would be 192.168.1.1. 10. Enter the routers password into the ?Password? field; by default the password is admin. 11. Browse for the file in the Firmware Upgrade utility program by clicking on the button next to file with the '?' symbol on it. Look for the file named 'code.bin' in the folder where the firmware files were extracted to. 12. Highlight the code.bin file and click on the Open button to direct the TFTP loader program to put that file into the "File" box. 13. The full path should be displayed [example: c:\linksys\code.bin]. 14. Click on the Upgrade button to begin the upgrade process. 15. The upgrade should take about 1 minute, and you will be prompted after the upgrade is complete and successful. If you are still having troubles, contact Linksys Technical Support.
