The S1 uses SD cards. SD cards top out at 2GB, any larger cards are actually SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity). SDHC devices will accept SD cards, but SD devices will not accept SDHC cards. They will fit physically but not electronically.
In fact, the S1 manual does not list any cards larger than 1GB.
I have used larger SD Cards than 2 GB, I've used an 8 GB Generic from MicroCenter, with no problems. But I recently saw a nice sale at Bed Bath & Beyond, on a 4GB SDHC Card, however the add just Stated "SD CARD"....so I bought one, and the Coolpix 7600 will not accept the Card. So, a Larger "SD" Card will, or has worked fine for me, but the Newer "SDHC" Cards will not work, different electronically, and Not Compatable....
It depends on the CAMERA as to Maximum Size of Card... I have an Old Canon that takes SD cards... but only to a 2 Gig size.... the bigger ones FIT but will not work. Not sure if there is a Software upgrade for these Cameras or not... but if there IS then maybe the Upgrade will allow bigger sized cards.
