Garmin Etrex Legend's joystick works intermitently. And you never know how it will work. Sometimes it works left/right but not up down. Sometime left/right and up/down but will not select when pushed down. Other times all functions work properly. Software maybe? I downloaded the latest update to fix the lines in the screen but hasn't fixed this problem.

If it hasn't been used in a long time it could take up to 30 minutes to get positioning. Get a clear view of the sky and let it set at least 30 minutes. If that doesn't work antennae connection is bad. Its not a software issue.

I had the exact same problem. It only occurs on mine when I have the WAAS enabled under setup.

I had a similar problem with my first unit. I returned it to the store where I bought it, and they were kind enough to give me a new unit because it was still under warranty. Normally, it would have to be sent to Garmin for replacement under warranty. It might be worth a try if your unit is still under warranty.

Update your unit software for free via the Garmin.com website. This is caused by a new satellite launched in 2008. The update fixes this problem.

Unfortunately the only fix for this is to send it back to Garmin for repair. This one can go one of two ways. Either the screen is faulty in which case it's a quick fix and you go away happy, or it's a software fault.. In which case I'd ask for a new one because in my experience most software faults with Garmin devices become recurring problems even though they clear and reprogramme them invariably we see them coming back with more software issues..
