Xbox 360 Starts when DVD SATA cable is unplugged...
Ok so my Xbox 360 recently stopped working. I worked on a buddies console, and used my hard drive with his console. When I reconnected my Xbox, with the hard drive attached, it started up but then restarted itself, and kept going through this phase. It wouldn't let the Xbox logo reach the center of the screen. So I removed the hard drive, and it stated fine. Then once it had gotten to the main interface, you would go to start a game, and it would sit at a black screen. When you would pull up the menu from the controller, it wouldn't exectue anything you pressed. So I shut my console off, and let it sit for a while, then came back and had the start then restart problem again. This time without the hard drive on. So I took my console apart and cleaned all the contacts for everything. Then I reassembled the system, and it worked perfectly even with the hard drive attached. I played it for a little bit, then shut it down. About 3 days later, I went to play it again, and it did the exact same thing, startup then reset. So I took it apart, again, and checked the Ring of Lights Board. I then tried something else, I removed the DVD drive itself from the console, power and SATA. The Xbox booted right up without any problems. So I then reconnected the drive, both power and SATA, and then it wouldn't start up. I removed just the SATA cable and the Xbox started up fine. So I tried a different SATA cable, and still got nothing. So I figure that it is either the drive's SATA component that is messed up, or its the actual on-board SATA module. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. The only thing I can think of doing is getting the Drive Key, and transferring it to a new drive.
Re: Xbox 360 Starts when DVD SATA cable is unplugged...
Have you re-connected the sata cable the correct way round,if you put it upside down you will have problems, connect it the other way around and see if it works.
It sounds like your console was suffering from screen freeze, if it would not respond to your controller commands, the best thing to do to cure this is to replace the heatsink paste on top of the gpu(under the small heatsink) then repace the clamp by screwing the heatsink to the board, this is basically the same cure for rrod, so there are plenty of guides around.

Disconnect all cables from the Xbox 360 and remove the
faceplate from the front of the console. Lift the plastic tabs on the
outer shell and remove the plastic casing from the machine. Unscrew the
Torx size 7 screws and lift open the metal cover. Unplug both the power
and SATA cables from the rear of the DVD drive and lift it out of the
console. Replace
it with the new DVD drive, and connect the power cable to the unit.
Connect your SATA cable to the DVD drive and a free SATA port on your
computer.Turn on your computer and open a web browser. Download
JungleFlasher and run the program. As of September 2010, JungleFlasher
is the most stable and up-to-date flashing program for Xbox 360, and it
is also the only program capable of flashing Xbox 360 drives from within
Windows (earlier programs used MS-DOS). Click "Flash .BIN to DVD" in
the program's main menu and select your Xbox 360's DVD drive. The
program will flash the new DVD drive for use with your Xbox 360
console.Turn off the computer once the flashing process is complete
and disconnect your SATA cable from the DVD drive and your PC. Reconnect
the Xbox 360 SATA cable to the new DVD drive, then close the metal
cover on the console. Rescrew the Torx size 7 screws and replace the
outer plastic shell on the Xbox 360. Return the faceplate to its
original position then reconnect all external cables and accessories to
the console. Power on the Xbox 360 and the replacement DVD drive will
function normally.
Some
of us suddenly when we turn on our Xbox 360 console one day we got one
red light flashes on the ROL (Ring of Light) around the Xbox 360 power
button, and we got an Error message appearing on the TV screen "System
error" also might occur with any error code like E66, E67, E68, E71, E74
or E77, all the same.
When
you get any of these messages appearing on your screen with one red
light flashing on the ROL of your Xbox 360 console that's an indicator
of a hardware problem with the console connection to one of the parts
connected to it as the hard drive or cables.
So, first disconnect all power and AV cables from the back of your Xbox 360 console and also unplug the power cord from the wall socket, wait for a minute then reconnect them all back and try to turn on your Xbox 360 console once more.
If
that doesn't work, it seems then to be a fault with your Xbox 360 hard
drive so turn off the console again and remove the hard drive then turn
on your Xbox 360 console without the hard drive, supposed then to work
fine, it might be an intermittent issue and when you reconnect the hard
drive your Xbox 360 will work fine all after, or it will just work fine
without the hard drive so it will be then definitely a fault with your
Xbox 360 hard drive so call Xbox 360 customer support to exchange the
hard drive for you.
The Xbox 360 console might even keep giving
you the same error code even after you remove the hard drive so it will
then appear to be a fault with your Xbox 360 console not the hard drive
& also in a case like this we need to contact Xbox 360 customer
support to exchange the console.

1. Carefully open the Xbox by removing the torx screws and then releasing the clips that hold the case together. The clips and molding pieces all come off easily; pry them open carefully.
2. Load the flash firmware disc into the DVD drive and power off the Xbox. 3. Disconnect the DVD drive from the SATA cable and note the brand of drive used in your Xbox. Currently Microsoft uses Hitachi, Phillips and Toshiba DVD drives in the Xbox 360. Only the Toshiba and Hitachi drives have firmware updates.
4. Connect the DVD drive to your PC with a cross-wired SATA cable interfaced to a compatible SATA port. Confirm that the video cable is connected to the Xbox so that it won't turn off during the flash process.
5. Hold the two loose wires of the cross-wired cable together and press the "Start" button on the Xbox. Separate the wires immediately when the green light begins to flash on the front of the Xbox. The light will begin to flash quickly and the drive will begin to spin as it enters mode "B."
6. Turn the PC on and allow it to fully boot from the DVD drive. If Windows appears to fail the boot, eject the DVD and it will finish booting. You've successfully flashed the drive. 7. Reassemble the Xbox and enjoy playing the backup of your favorite game.

The number for Microsoft is usually listed on the back of any game manual.
I hope I was able to fixya problem, and Happy Gaming!
The maxtor hard drives will work with an Xbox360 but in only one case, your xbox hard drive is linked to work only with your console and if you swapped hard drives the xbox wouldn't read it so to answer this you need to reset your Xbox 360 copy protection serial number i.e. Flashing your Xbox or Chipping it, once your Xbox is Flashed or Chipped you can use a maxtor hard drive through the SATA cable port in your Xbox
