I have had this same problem. After charging the player, disconnect using the safely remove icon. When I turn on the player I got the message: Profiling requires 20 mg of free space, shutting down. It won't stay on. This happens every time I charge it. I NOW KNOW HOW TO FIX IT!!!!!!!!!!! Connect the player to the computer again as if you were going to charge it. Look at the folders. Go to the one that says My Files. You will see 2 NBF files. I delete the larger one only. Disconnect from computer and turn it on again. It should work fine now. You will have to re-do your favorites list each time but all your music should still be there as mine is. Now I have a backup on my computer so if anything goes wrong, I can just drag and drop the music easily back onto the player. I hope this helps many of you because I have been going crazy with this for over a year now. I even sent the player back to RCA. Now I can fix it myself.

SOURCE: cannot open my M4204-A
Sounds like you need to reformat yyour drive or update your firmware. Here is the link try it first without formatting there is a check to format and not format. If you run into a problem. do this
Unplug the mp3 from the USB press and hold the menu button for 10 seconds, release then press and hold the play button, while holding the play button plug it back in. Wait until it says intializing, then release the play button and press start. Here is the link.

I'm hoping to ficx ur problem. Ibeliev you might have to much loaded on yor mp3 for it to even startup completely, so I've tried to write down how you can remove a song or 2 or 3 etc to make room on your mp3 memory. This might resolve yyour problem.
Try hooking it up to a computer throught the usb cord, then click start (just close any windows that open up), then click 'my computer', a window will apper listing several 'discs' for example the harddrive is usually disc (c)...One of the discs there ( (f) opr (e ) orso) will be your mp3 memory. Open all disc one by one, (you can skip the harddrive disc (c) ), till you find files that resemble the ones on your mp3..when you find those, then delet a few songs orso. When done, close all windows, remove the mp3 and try again.
I fthis helped (or not ) please rate, thank you!

Found a small pinhole on the back of the device. In small lettering it says reset. Carefully insert a pin and light push when you feel it's hit a dead end. It resets the issue and you can resume using your device. Leave it up to a girl to find that and figure it out. lol

We are having the sam eproblem with the asking to free up 20mb. Your solution (The player needs free memory space for building up the playlists: delete the amount of data off the player.
Connect to the computer and backup all the data from the player onto the computer.
Next delete some of the saved data from the player to free at least 20 MB of memory.
All support for the RCA M4304 on next page:..... Does not work for us. When we plug it into the computer all it does is show it usb connected but we cant get into player anymore to delete anything. Please advice
