Sunbeam SMW5500 micro/convection oven shorted out when opening door

When using microwave I felt something like a buzzing while pressing the button to open door. A fuse blew in main wall panel. Replaced blown fuse and micro worked a bit more and then same thing happened while pressing button to open door. This time micro is DEAD - not even a light working. My computer is on same circuit and is back up and running. I've been reading a number of other problems and solutions that seem similar and I wonder if there is a fuse in this model as well. Dunno if I should invest in repair or just buy new one. Won't be able to afford another combo with convection if I buy new so would rather get this one fixed if possible. Thanks in advance to all you fantastic techs that are willing to offer advice.

You are decribing a typical Door Safety Switch problem. The Door Safety Switches has Failed. The Door Safety Switch is designed to shut down the Micro in the event the Micro is still cooking when the door is being opened. The first "Click" of the switch cuts off the "Cook". If it does not cut off the "Cook", the second "Click" blows the power. Otherwise it would "Cook" with the door open, and I need not to tell you how DANGEROUS that could be. It first Tripped the Circuit Breaker which supplies power to the Microwave. After Re-Setting the Breaker the same thing happened except this time the Micro is DEAD- not even a light working. Yes, there is a line FUSE inside the Micro. You however need to address the Door Switch SHORT before replacing the fuse. If not, it will just Blow The Fuse Again, and Again, until the Short is corrected.
Call around, ask How much to replace a Door Safety Switch.
Good Luck!

Electronic Door open button buzzes when pressed and door does not open

If the electronic door open button on your Westinghouse microwave is buzzing when you press it and the door does not open, it is possible that there is a problem with the door latch mechanism. The buzzing sound may be caused by an electrical issue, such as a short circuit or a loose connection. I recommend unplugging the microwave and carefully inspecting the door latch mechanism for any visible damage or loose parts. If you are unable to identify the cause of the problem, I recommend contacting Westinghouse or a qualified appliance repair service for further assistance. It is important to have this issue addressed, as a malfunctioning door latch on a microwave can be a safety hazard.

RE: Samsung microwave SMH7187STG mfg'd 5/08. I heated cup of tea 2 min. Then I closed micro's door & micro emitted a continuous electrical buzzing sound.I opened door & buzzing stopped.

The cook relay on your control board is shorted, and the unit is cooking whenever you close the door.

When the magnetron overheats, its thermostat opens, shutting power down until the unit cools to a safe level, then power is restored.

I regularly repair these with my $54.95 service, which includes insured return shipping.

Details are here, or for full information and instructions, please e-mail me here at [email protected] and remind me of your full model number and symptoms.

The oven cuts out after counting down from 1 minute at 38 seconds and no heat

No heat is typically failed micro switch's that act as the door safety interlock. Remove the cabinet to find the tiny switches. Test them for proper action. Should show open or short depending on whether the door is open or closed.

When started, light& turntable operate normally, but no heating by microwave. Transformer normally sounds smooth, but now makes rattle or vibrating noise, like something is loose.

Check the door safety intertlock micro switch for proper behavior. If it is faulty, the oven will think the door is open and will not turn on the magnatron.

Wont heat items in the micro or convection

MODEL NUMBER NEEDED

Apparently this is not actually an R-510HK since that model does not have convection mode. Can you reply back with the correct model number? We may have the service manual for you.

A PRELIMINARY OPINION

It sounds like you have loose door switch mounts or possibly loose door hinges.

If the door won't open via the door open button, then the outer cover will have to be removed.

BEFORE YOU RATE THIS

This is a preliminary post, asking for further information (model). Please withhold your rating until we actually offer the solution.
