Question about Sony FD Trinitron KD-34XBR960 34" TV

Open Question

Sony KD-34XBR960 television won't power on. I hear the "whoosh" sound that it normally makes upon startup, and the red led for "timer/standby" blinks, but the screen remains dark and there is no sound. I tried the reset, as indicated in the online owners manual, but it did not make any difference. I also tried plugging it in by itself, instead of in the monster cable station, but that didn't make any difference either.

Our set turns itself off by itself. Prior to this happening, it goes to a green screen. It usually happens after the set has been on for a couple of hours. We bought the set in April, 2004 and the warrantly has now expired. The longer we keep the set on, the more it turns itself off. Is this a tuner, on/off problem or the tube? Any estimates for repair?

Turning your tv off did not cause this issue, so don't blame yourself for that. A 6 or 7 blink shutdown is because one of the two switch mode power supply control ic's have failed. the part number on them is mcz3001. They are located on the "D" baord, i don't recommend replacing this yourself because even with a tv unplugged from the wall high voltages still exist in the set.

A repairman may preform one of the two following things, he may change the whole D board or he may replace the individual components. The repair will cost around $200 if they replace the components, and if they replace the board it will cost more.

phillips has the same problem but if your tv actually turns on it could be a short or just a fuse sonys a better tv than phillips should be an easy fix call a repir guy going price for that problem is 75.00 dont pay any more than that. the economy is bad everyone needs the work be smart. make sure if you say yes to the work that the repair guy will waive the consultaion cost of usually 35 to 75 dollars, if you chose to have the work done.

SOURCE: Sony KD-34xbr960 will not turn

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. If its flashing continuously and you are unable to count the no# of blinks then the issue is with the bulb going bad and should be replaced. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

There's a good chance you have failing electrolytic capacitors either in the power section, and the clicking is the protection relay kicking out.

Any caps in this or other sections that look bulged at the top, or bulged/leaking at the bottom need to be replaced.
If you repeatedly turn it off and on, eventually it'll probably stay on, but every time you turn it off, the TV will get harder and harder to start up until one day it just won't.
Sometimes you have to do the opposite to start it up and unplug it for some time and then try again.

If you aren't tech savvy, don't worry, read the rest of this solution and watch the videos.

If you are handy with a soldering iron and can identify the power supply and inverter / FM section for the backlights, an inexpensive handful of capacitors will likely fix you right up.
Match the capacitance on the capacitors. Go over voltage if you can, and still have them fit.
IE - it's not a bad idea to replace a 10V cap with a 16V or 25V or even a 50V, but don't replace a 680uF cap with a 500uF or a 1000uF (unless you are positive it's only doing ripple filtering, and even then, you should go OVER, not under the uF rating).

Most of the caps that go are 10V 1000uF or 3300uF.

I found some great videos of the procedure (for many Samsungs with the same issue) on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l0AUj8QUkg&NR=1&feature=fvwp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7b_nTaZYcU&feature=related

As you can see, this issue spans plasma TVs, as well as large and small LCD TVs and monitors.
The parts are cheap, and skill required is minimal.

Engineer seeks help with no-picture, no-sound, normal standby blinking

Could just be a power issue. I have not done much with CRT televisions except smash them to bits. I would open it up and try and look for anything obvious. Since it is taking so long to come on, I am wandering if there is a cap that is failing. It will be hard to know if there is no visual evidence of failure, and the only true way to measure is with an ESR meter.

Count the number of blinks of standby light at one time after switch ON. Count it once more and make sure that the out is correct. These blinks are fault indications. Check this link to get more details about the blinking codes to Sony Trinitron TVs. Details are there. You can locate the faulty section by these blinkings. If you are not familiar with electronics, do not attempt to repair. Whether you suffer fatal electrical shock! Instead, contact the nearest service center.

Sony TV LED & Blinking Codes - What Does It Mean When Standby/Timer Light Flashes

Sony has provided a "self-diagnosis function" with your TV, that in the case of abnormalities or problems the LED or red blinking light on the Timer/Standby indicator flashes a number of times to indicate the issue.
when there is trouble with your Sony Television set -- it indicates the issue in either the diagnostic mode, or even more commonly by flashing a series of LED blinks or flashes on the front of your television. Each set or frequency of the blinks indicates a very specific problem with the television itself.

SONY TV PICTURE TURN GREEN WITHOUT RETRACE

Picture goes to high green with retrace lines that shows picture tube is defective and requires replacement.
Usually in above symptom, TV goes to standby mode and standby light blinks when green raster problem occurred.
New TV is better option because picture tube of KV-34XBR960 would not be available any more.
Thanks.
