I am having the same problem and have read that several others are having the same problem as well. My guess a lot of folks are having this problem. I plug the usb cable to camera/computer. Green light followed by 3 short red light blinks - - then nothing. Purchased new battery thinking defective battery but had same problem with new battery. Contacted Kodak and after several emails they promised a power adaptor but in spite of the fact that it is offered for sell on their online store they tell me their goodwill gesture adaptor is on backorder! So much for goodwill gestures. The camera is obviously defective and while they won't admit it, is why Kodak is offering the adaptor for free. Pathetic. Any ideas how to get Kodak to step up their offer to supply the adaptor? We've only had this camera for two months. It was a Christmas present for my daughter and have yet to use it.

Kodak is such a dinosaur company. They advised the AC Adaptor was on back order and couple days later I received it in the mail. Tried using it to charge both batteries both old and new. Same thing. It simply does not charge the battery. One green light blinks followed by 3 blinking red lights.

No advice needed. The camera is defective and the morans at Kodak customer service and tech just don't get it. It is a brand new camera since we have yet to be able to actually use it since Christmas. I don't want them to fix it - - I just want my money back on this piece of junk. Then I will go out and buy a reliable camera for my daughter. We will stay away from Kodak.

I also bought the M853 for my daughter for Christmas and have also been unable to use it. I've spent many hours on the phone with tech "support" (most of this time on hold) and I agree that they are clueless. My particular Problem is that I'm getting the message "USB Device Not Recognized" when I plug into the USB port to attempt to transfer photos. I ended up sending the brand new camera back to Kodak at MY expense and was sent a refurbished M853 (with a complimentary memory card for all my troubles including a letter written to a VP).

Well, now I'm having the same problem. I'm suspecting the USB cable now, but unfortunately it's such a unique cable I don't have a substitute lying around that I can try.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Please, please, PLEASE tell me I didn't buy a dud! I bought this camera to replace a friend's that I ruined, and I live in Central America so I can't very well just get support to mail me stuff! At the store where I bought the camera the salesman took it out of the box to make sure it worked...he plugged it in and it turned on...so I brought it home and plugged it into my husband's Mac. It first started blinking green for a while...then it stoppped so I tried to make it charge again and then got the one green light and several red blinking lights. Now I am not getting any lights at all. I have visited the Kodak website and done all that they offered...nothing worked. Their troubleshooting guide finally said I would have to send it in - it's brand freaking new! Please, help me out!!

I got a brand spankin new Kodak Easyshare M853. I first downloaded the software, then i followed the intructions. I plug it in to charge and the light never comes on. Is this a dud? Or just a minor problem? Please help me!!!!!

My M853 was a Christmas present from a few months ago, and was working & charging fine, but then all of a sudden, it wouldn't turn on and the shutter is NOT retracted. I connect the USB cable like usual, but it's been "charging" for 3 days now and the green light keeps going off no matter how many times I reinsert the battery & reset the USB cable. It still won't turn on (the shutter is still sticking out). Their help web page does not help. I've sent emails, but still they haven't said much or given me a solution that works.

Sometimes the green light blinks, other times it is steady. A couple of times, I've seen a single amber flash when I reset the USB cable to try to get it to "charge." I am really disappointed with this camera, and I have needed it the last 3 days it has been "charging."

I'll plug the camera up into the usb card to let it charge, the lights blinks for a minute and then goes off. Or if it do comes on the screen will be black.

light blinkz once green 3 times red n shuta off

  • Anonymous Feb 06, 2009

First mine did the same. I just messed with it some and read the manual some more. If you put it on "Auto" and plug it in, then it will stay lit (green) when charging, and will go off when it is fully charged. If that doesnt work, buy a new battery. I got mine for less than $20-and it lasts awhile. If all else fails, call Kodak. They can replace your battery and/or charger or you can send it in to be fixed-at no charge if its still on warranty. It comes with a 1 year warranty at least.

Is the light that's coming on green or red?
if it's red, there's a charging error - contact kodak, they may provide a 5v ac adapter to resolve your charging issue

if it's green, was it blinking or solid? is the battery drained?
if the battery still has a little charge on it, please connect it to the computer then turn it on, check if there's power light
check if the screen is black - that means it's making a connection and the charging is the only issue - computer not detecting it, maybe resolved by kodak's software support

if the camera screen is active - that means there's definitely something wrong with the camera

arrange repairs with kodak, include the battery and usb cable

I too had a problem with the charging of the camera. After talking with a computer savy guy, he told me all USB ports are not equal. Many do not have the power to charge something. This goes for hubs as well as on board ports. I tried 3 computers and finally got the proper charge cycle to kick in. I am looking to get the AC adapter to bypass this problem.

One day my i was trying to charge my camera, but the usb cord didn't fit in my camera anymore...what should I do?

There is a small Grey or black adapter (CCC 26 Pins AV/USB Adapter) that usually goes onto the cable.
There is also 2 plugs on the camera. You might be using the incorrect one.

If you need to get hold of the adapter CCC 26 Pins AV/USB Adapter:

Can I use the same USB cable to charge the batteries as well as transferring photos to computer from camera. If not could you tell me the serial number of each cable. Also would a universal USB cable be...

Yes, you can use the USB cable to charge the battery. But you need to insert the cable into the computer USB port, no the USB HUB, and the computer is on, not in sleep mode.

My camera is not charging

I got this camera from my friend's daughter. She told me she only used it a few times and won't charge. At first, I tried to charge it thru the USB port, got a brief green light then 3 red blinks just like others. So, I tried to charge it thru a powered USB hub and it charges. Once it fully charged, I took some pictures and tried to charge it again thru a regular USB (not the powered USB hub I used earlier) and it is charging right now. This is also true for a certain cell phones. If you let the battery drained its power completely all the way, you must charge it with a high current charger to wake up the battery before you can charge thru USB port.

Can not charge my kodak i think its my usb cable.

If trying to charge using USB through a computer, you have to have the computer on, booted up, and running! The only other thing to try if that is not the problem is to replace the USB line you use, checking plug ends for damage. Good Luck!

Lens error and camera battery not charging.

SORRY TO SAY, BUT I AM READING HORROR STORIES ABOUT THIS MODEL OF CAMERA AND IT'S CHARGING OR LACK OF CHARGING SYSTEM. IT SEEMS IT IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE M853 AND ABOUT THE ONLY SOLUTION PEOPLE ARE FINDING IS USING A SEPARATE CHARGING BAY. IT SEEMS THAT VISTA HAS A POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ON USB PORTS THAT TURNS OFF THE POWER ON UN-USED USB PORTS AND THAT IS WHY THEY ARE NOT CHARGING. YOU NEED TO GO INTO THE USB PORT SETTINGS AND RIGHT CLICK THEM AND DISABLE THE SETTING THAT ALLOWS THEM TO SHUT DOWN POWER TO THE USB PORTS. IT ALSO SEEMS THAT THERE IS A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH THE MAIN BATTERIES IN THE M853 FROM THE VERY FIRST TIME YOU TRY TO CHARGE THEM. THEY SEEM TO NOT WANT TO TAKE A CHARGE. I KNOW ALL THIS IS BAD NEWS BUT GO TO GOOGLE AND PUT KODAK EASYSHARE M853, NOT CHARGING AND READING THE STORIES FOR YOURSELVES. THEY ARE NOT PRETTY. BEST ADVICE I CAN OFFER IT SEEMS IS SEPARATE CHARGING STATION AND DEDICATED USB PORT YOU KNOW IS HOT. GOOD LUCK ON THIS ONE. IF THE CAMERA IS FAIRLY NEW, I WOULD CONSIDER RETURNING IT! THIS ONE HAS A REALLY BAD TRACK RECORD. IF I CAN HELP MORE, REPLY TO: ARCLIGHT1217

Charging battery

Take it back to the store get your money back and then go out and get a real camera. The m853 is a piece of junk. I had the same / similar problems and Kodak is clueless about the problem.
