Sound heard is faster and high pitched than normal...

I had a Celeron 700MHz 256MB SDRAM 60GB HDD Desktop PC. Things were working fine but I needed a faster processor. So I bought a Desktop PC having the following config: P4, 2.4GHz, 512MB DDR2 RAM, 80GB HDD, Intel 845GL Chipset/MotherBoard, Realtek AC'97 Sound chip.
I find that the sound -- regardless of the type of media file played (MP3, MPG movie, WMV, any games, MIDI, WAV, etc.) is faster and also high pitched than what it should normally be. Its sounds like when a person inhales helium and then speaks. Even the music is fast & High Pitched. I tried uninstalling & re-installing the drivers, downloading codecs & installing them & umpteen number of things but I'm now tired of going through all this. Could anyone please post me a correct & proven solution to my problem. Keep in touch on my -mail address i.e. [email protected] or [email protected]. Thanks.

P.S.: Please be quick...

Open the back cover of cpu cabinet. Then reconnect RAM memory and both connection to harddrive . Pull cmos cell from motherboard for 10 minutes then put it back reconnect all connection to motherboard and ATX connector, make sure RAM is working fine and harddrive recognized in bios . Make sure motherboard doesnot ground with cabinet. Reconnect pci card if any. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProductList.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=96266

You just have to select the 4 digit number.
Its probably at the backpanel of the machine.

Gateway says max RAM is two 128mb modules but heard two 256mb modules will fit...true?

You need to make sure you have a processor of at least 700mhz. Two 256MB modules no problem. Many times you can buy a used laptop on ebay (either 9300 or Compaq armada e500) with the two 256MB modules included a lot cheaper than just buying 2 new 256MB modules. The Compaq Armada and 9300 modules interchangeable. Either way, you can still buy 2- 256MB modules(PC100/133 SDRAM 144PIN LOW DENSITY) for under $40.00 shipped. Very easy to install. I suppose if you have a P4 processor you could even go larger. I use Linux, which is 3-4 times faster than windows anyways, with no viruses etc. I have two 9300 laptops running like so with no problems whatsoever. Extremely fast(with ubuntu), too! If you haven't tried Ubuntu operating system you haven't lived. I'm no computer geek and find it so simple and fast. Free downloads on internet or buy a Live CD on ebay for a buck to try out without having to install.

I need to know how much ram my motherboard will be able to run without burning up? I have an Emachines t1090 w/ Windows XP, 900MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 128MB SDRAM, CD-ROM 48x Max. CD-Drive, 20GB Hard...

The max for your system is 512MB. You have two memory slots and one has a 128MB chip so if you want 512MB, you need two 256MB chips and throw away the 128MB.
At Newegg, a 256MB chip is $42+ shipping of $1. I'd consider getting a new computer instead.
I don't think memory upgrade will tax your system cooling.
