My Sony plasma tv made a pop sound and now picture is dark.
My Sony plasma tv made a pop sound, smelled like something was burning so I shut it off. When I turned it back on the smell did not come back, I had a clear screen but the picture is dark.

You will need the y and x sustain boards replaced, possibly the buffers. very expensive repair. you can replace one board but its best to do all of them.

yes bulbs dont smell unless they pop plus its 3 bulbs in there, plus the tv would still have power/standby lights, and it's not that type of smell, replace the bulb but im sure this will not fix the problem, also my experience with dlp set it is often not worth repair, good luck you need more help or question just ask good luck
should have unplugged it when you noticed the smell.
UNPLUG and remove and look at lamp you installed--is something in the housing where lamp goes melted? I hope you did not touch the face of the bulb with your hand or fingers.
What ever is wrong find it before trying to use set again.
Shop around for the Big Screen repair Tech. Shop. The problems u discribing, the tv have more than a dead projection bulb.Circuits boards have burn components, must be trouble shoot and replace first. Before even know the static of the projection bulb.
get real bright flashlight shin close to the screen in dark roomand try to push the menu button if its the bulb you'll see some picture with flash light shining that shows your backlight is out
Usually, yes. A bulb that has audibly 'popped' will be apparently bad if you pull it out of the TV (shattered). Other times this is a lamp ballast board.
