I have downloaded a MRL'mms' file that I chose open with vlc as the default programme, how do I change this setting because it will not play on vlc, would like to choose another application to open it with

Download VLC media player (video lan) it uses the symbols of an orange traffic cone.
Install
Got to video file you want to play, right click and "open with" then chose VLC media player

This might be a virtual drive or just a mislabled drive by VLC.

When you open VLC go Open Disk>DVD or CD button as appropriate>Manually edit the Disk Device box as appropriate.

What do you mean turns default? Are you saying all your music icons turned into the VLC icon as the default player to play them with?

If so you can change that. Right Click on one of the music icons that has vlc as the player and select Open With then select Chose Program at the bottom. When the Open With window opens select the player you want to use as your default and look down near the bottom and put a check in the box that says Always Use The Selected Program To Open This Kind Of File.

LOL, wow that's an oddity, normally it's the other way around where it plays store bought but not burned. Make sure you are not trying to play Blue Ray in a Regular DvD Player.

Oh, one more real important point. If you're using Windows Media Player as the player, that might be your problem. Media Player cannot handle all types of media devices and sometimes they don't give you a message saying anything because it just don't recognize a disc is even in the drive.

Go to www.google.com and in the search box type "Download VLC Player" (without the quotes). Look for the site www.videolan.org/vlc in the search results and click it. That's where you want to download it from. VLC is an open source player that will play any type of video format. It is far greater than Windows Media Player. It installs in less than 3 minutes and it is fast and smooth. You'll love it. After you install it put your cd in the drive and you will probably be prompted as to which player to play it with. Click VLC. If VLC is not shown as one of the listed players chose the option to browse to chose it. Now after all this, if you still can't play the dvd, then your drive is faulty.

Tell me about it if you have VLC installed or Windows media player you can go to your music folder right click the song you want to play and then you can select what programme to open it up with
Example I want to listen to Lordi i go Right Click then to Open With i can see the players compatible with it so i Click VLC Player and it plays through that now if you want to constantly use media player or something else you can go to Right click Music File, go to Open With then click Choose Programme Click which Player you want to use then there should be a check box saying make it your default setting after you have done this every time you click any music it will use the setting you chose. Copy the file to your laptop hard drive then double click on the icon. It should invoke a media player which will play the movie.

If it doesn't work that easily then go to FIlehippo.com and download a programme, for free, called VLC media player. Install the download selecting VLC as your default player as you go along.

Then double click on your movie icon.

The VLC and FFDshow both use the free Libavcodecs I suggest using MediaInfo from sourceforge by Jerome Martinez to find out the actual codec that has been used then search google for the installer for the specifed codec.
