From canon's support page:

This symbol indicates an empty or missing backup battery. The backup battery allows the camcorder to retain date, time and other settings when the main power source is removed.
The flashing symbol is not recorded by the camcorder so you can continue filming without problems.

To stop the flashing symbol remove the old backup battery and replace it with a new one, or recharge the built-in lithium battery if the camcorder has a built-in rechargeable battery.
Note: when the backup battery runs out during filming please do not remove the power supply (battery pack) before the camcorder is powered from a household power source and power adapter, or the user settings and date/time will be reset.

For more detailed information please consult the instruction manual.

Red light flashing in view finder. Looks like a bowl with a paintbrush and a line through it. Camera does not record when turned on, have to turn off and on several times before it will possibly record

The red flashing symbol means that the backup battery needs to be replaced. I'm not sure that it is what is preventing recording, but you can change it and see if it works.

The backup battery is a CR2025 button battery. It is located under a square plastic cover, beneath the main battery. Take the main battery off and you should see this cover. The backup battery should be installed with the + facing out.

There is a red flashing symbol on the screen

If there is a red symbol that flashes at the bottom of the screen, it means NO CARD. No more images can be taken. For more details refer page 101 in the below link.

Chewing tapes up terrible destruction on tapes

This is a clear sign that the DVCam tape path needs cleaning. Use a mini DV cleaning tape 2 or 3 times and if it still does not have any effect get it to a camera store for a professional clean.

Canon mv 830, grey horizontal lines across screen when replaying and a flashing red symdol which looks like a bowl with a slash across it and an arrow pointing down into it

Hi - I have just managed to fix this issue of grey stripes across my screen on playback on my canon mv800 by going into the audio format settings in the menu and changing the format from 12 bit to 16 bit - good luck everyone else! Sharon

Transfer recording from camcorder to pc then burn to disc

You need one software like Ulead VideoStudio to transfer movie to your computer. Good luck!

Flashing red symbol like a bowl crossed out

it means you have no back up battery installed to save time/date info. I know on the GL2 if you open the LCD screen there is another small plastic tab you can open and insert a relatively small battery. Do it and the icon will disappear. Otherwise its no big deal. If you dont need time/date stamps on your tapes then there is no need to install the battery unless you are just annoyed.
