I have a garmin nuvi 250 and the charging port won't work so my gps is dead and I can't recharge it and it's not the charger I tried other ones it's the port on the gps itself
You can not repair the port for that.
Check to see if you are under warranty but try store you bought it from if not try to go to garmin.
The problem was all the weight from the cord from bumps and turns loosened the port and eventually broke or cracked the inside of the port.
Before you try to get a new one check the charging cord and make sure there isn't alot of play.
And instead of hanging it high use the dashboard mounts
They are weighted mounts that do not attach to any thing they just clip on a weighted mount and it makes it easier to move it from on vehicle to another
Its much easier than having to undo the suction cup on the windsheild and tring to stick it on the other vehicles windsheild.

Common problem is a loose/broken charger port. This will prevent the unit from powering up when connected to an external charger and will prevent the battery from charging. The unit will appear dead. The USB port must be replaced or repaired. More info on this problem can be seen here: SHARCNET USA Out of Warranty GPS Digital Camera Repair
I had the same problem with mine and got it working by doing the following while on the phone to Garmin. Plug your charger cord into the device and your computer (do not use a laptop, you need the higher current from a desktop for this). Hold the power button down for as long as it takes for the Garmin logo to display, this could be as much as 1 minute. As soon as the image shows on the screen, release the power button. If your Garmin isn't completely shot you will see it boot up. If you have the Garmin Web Updater program on your computer, run it and update the operating system software to insure you have the latest greatest from Garmin. Once that is done, update your XML data files - they'll be on the list of updates if you need them. Once those are done you can update any voice or language files you'd like. Lastly, leave your GPS plugged in at least an hour or two to give it a charge. Overnight would be better to insure your battery is really well powered up. At this point your Garmin should function normally. The Garmin tech I spoke with told me some units start acting funky when the battery runs down too low and if it's REALLY dead it won't even take a charge or power up when you hook up your charger cord. Try holding the power button for as long as it takes to get a spark & you should be on your way. If not, call Garmin's support number for your locale & they're do their best to get you back up & running again. Cheers, Jeff
Just connect the satnav to your computer's usb port. Turn on the satnav, if it doesn't come on automatically and it will charge. It will take about 8 hours to charge compared to 4on a car or mains charger.
You can connect it to the cigarette lighter socket of a car with the charger lead that came with it. This method takes about 4 hours to fully charge it.
You can charge it with a mains charger which has to be bought seperately at shops that sell garmin satnavs. This also takes about 4 hours to charge.
You can connect it to the USB port of your computer with a mini USB lead. Turn on the computer and the satnav. This method takes about 8 hours to charge fully.
My condolences. I would suggest you plug the unit in to your computer's USB port using an appropriate data cable (in case you no longer have the Garmin data cable, there are lots of devices, including cameras, that use such a cable with the large USB plug at one end and the mini-USB at the other). That would give you a handle on where the fault lies -- in the auto charger cable itself vs the nuvi's socket. If the nuvi charges from your computer, you're halfway home; if not, I suspect the cost of repairing the nuvi's USB jack could exceed the cost of a replacement unit.
If the GPS's internal battery is allowed to discharge too far, it will not be possible to recharge with the card charger, until it is brought up to a certain level. Connect the nuvi to a computer with USB cable overnight. This will trickle charge the internal battery to a level that will allow the car charger / cradle to keep the GPS charged from that point on. Anytime the car charger fails to recharge the internal battery, the USB charge method will have to be performed first.
Make sure you have the rite charger. Garmin will only work with a garmin charger. You may have accidently picked up a blackberry charger or something. Hope this helps
From dead flat it takes about 9-10 hours do not leave on charger for more than that otherwise you will overheat and burn it out. After each use recharge for about 3-4 hours depending on whether the unit has been used for that lengthyof time
