My VCR is an SLV-E820UX. The headup display will not light up although occasionally it will appear for a short period. Also, the fast forward operatioin is noisey (rewind is fine) and makes a sound like slipping cogs when it reaches the end of the tape.

O Front display, wrong functions on front buttons.

CAUSE
Corrupted data is stored in the NVM memory (IC605) or part of the data is erased.
The model option data flags are erased or set incorrectly.

SOLUTION
1. CAPACITOR AND RESISTOR REPLACEMENT NOTE
For continuous reliability, regardless of the symptom, ALWAYS check and replace if necessary C701 in the correct mounting position and ALWAYS modify R668/R669 from 10k to 4.7k.
1.1. Open the set and replace C701 "470µF 10V" (1-126-925-11)
1.2. Make sure to mount C701 in the correct way, the positive (+) side points to the edge of the MCB. NOTE THAT THE WHITE PRINTING FOR C701 ON THE MCB IS INCORRECT (REVERSE)!
1.3. Replace R668 and R669 "10k" (1-216-675-11) with "4.7k" (1-216-667-11).

2. OPTION DATA SETTINGS
2.1. Connect the unit to the AV input of a television with a SCART connection cable in order to enable the on-screen display.
2.2. Enter the unit into test mode: press the record button on the front panel, then press the menu button on the remote commander for 5 seconds until the option setting display appears on the connected television. The option display has 8 columns and 9 rows with decimal numbers.
2.3. Enter the correct option settings according to the model and model destination. Refer to the option setting table in this document or page 5-6E of the Service Manual.
2.4. The option number is selected with the FF, REW, STOP and PAUSE buttons on the remote commander.
2.5. Pressing the OK (PLAY) button on the remote commander activates the selected option number. An activated option number appears in reverse colour.
2.6. After all required option numbers are activated press the MENU button on the remote commander to save the changes. A message "Please wait" appears for a few seconds after which the setting is completed.
2.7. Turn the power OFF and back ON.

3. HEAD SWITCHING PULSE ADJUSTMENT
3.1. Remove the front panel.
3.2. Insert a VHS alignment tape (like KRV-4821PS).
3.3. Press the TEST button located behind the front panel at the left-hand side of the tape/display area.
3.4. Press the SP/LP button on the remote commander. The adjustments are operated automatically.

4. FUNCTIONAL CHECK
4.1. Re-assemble the unit and perform functional checks.
4.2. Check for correct language setting.
4.3. Confirm basic functions like Playback, FF, REW, etc.
4.4. Check for a noise-free picture quality in playback mode.
4.5. Switch the unit on and off for a couple of times.
4.6. Perform a timer record to confirm the function and picture quality.
4.7. Check the SmartLink function (if available with the connected television) by transferring the TV preset settings to the VHS recorder.

Hi,can I record digital transmissions on my sony slv-se820g vcr barry

You can record a digital TV signal on a VHS VCR but only in analog format. The digital signal must be input to the VCR by some component which has a yellow composite video output and a white audio output such as a digital cable TV box or satellite receiver. For over-the-air digital TV, either the TV must output analog video or you need a DTV converter box connected to the VCR. Bottom line, the digital signal must be converted to analog for the VCR since VHS VCRs generally are analog recorders.

Settings disappear

I suspect the internal backup battery is faulty inside the machine. Sometimes it can be an actual battery soldered to the circuit board otherwise look for a low voltage high capaticance capacitor - for example 3.5v 10F. If you dont know how to check for these things then find a competant technician. Good luck.

Try cleaning the entire Tape path, as I suspect a dirty Control Head. Since it is not wise that you open the machine and do it yourself, buy a good quality 'Wet Type' Head Cleaning cassette, and use as per instructions.

Sony VCR date only goes up 2006

I have 2 SLV-696HF units that won't work after 2007. I have had people tell me that I'll have to "find" a previous calendar that will work, since there are only 14 different calendars in our Gregorian system, 7 for non-leap years & 7 for leap years. The problem we have with this, is that the internal VCR calendar won't roll BACK far enough. I wonder if SONY has a way of flashing these units to fix this problem?

Slv-se820 vhs powers on but ?

this could be caused by noumerous things: 1. there may be all kinds of definitions that got messes up, such as a lock up of any kind. check manual, there should be a list of common faq's and solutions. 2. check for any blown fuses. check resistors. 3. regulator may have gone bad (not sure about that one). 4. there may be an incompatible level of voultage. if its too low it will not power on the system, if it is too high, the high-voultage mechanizm will cause it to shut down. measure the voultage in the system, if you dont know how to do it exactly: Remove both of the power transistors from the primary, then power up the circuit with AC, then provide 5V (variable) to the secondary side, send it back in the way it normally comes out! Now measure accross the transisor side of the opto while varying the 5V above and below 5V (note: the transistor side of the opto is on the primary side of the power supply since it is feedback) If the feedback circuits are working the opto should turn on and off as you vary the voltage above and below 5V. there could be many more options im afraid, but I hope that will do. good luck.
