The tv guide is kind of like a computer application. so the cable box can run that application or function. the cable card is an add on to your digital tuner which allows for the bits/codes to be descrambled. there are so many manufacturers of cable tv converters that it would be nearly impossible for sony or panasonic or toshiba to have an internal operating system to run the guide application. you may have bought a mac but the service is written in windows, for example. unfortunately the technology is simply not there for a cable card to do more than unscramble the digital signal. and inside that cable box from the cable company IS a cable card.....

Black screen

Possible causes
  • Your TV is not receiving or displaying the signal from your DIRECTV® Receiver.
  • Your receiver has correct guide information, but is not processing video correctly.
  • You are viewing a channel where an upcoming sporting or special event is scheduled or has recently ended.

Solutions
  • Turn TV off and on.
  • Make sure light on front panel of receiver is lit.
  • Press the "TV/DSS" button on the remote control or front panel of the receiver (not all receivers have this option).
  • Reset the receiver by unplugging the power cord for 15 seconds.
  • Check all cable connections between the dish, receiver and TV.

If the picture is black, but the program title and description display in a banner the top of the screen:
  • If the problem is only occurring on a few channels, check the detailed description of the program through the on–screen guide on those channels. Often, we display a blank screen with a banner before and after a high–profile event to alert customers about the event.
  • Reset the receiver by turning off and unplugging the power cord for 15 seconds.
  • Run a signal meter test to check your signal strength (press "menu" and look under "setup" or "installation").

If your signal strength is below 70 (or below 60 on HD receivers) in clear weather on transponders 1 and 2, see our troubleshooting steps for "Searching for satellite signal. Please stand by." You may see zero strength on transponders 4, 12, 18, 20, 26 and 28. This is normal in many areas. Your system manual shows how to run cables and point your dish.

I connected my dvd player to my coby hd tv, and the movie still want play, maybe I have it on the wrong chanel. What chanel should the hd tv be on?

Are you using a HDMI cable? Push the SOURCE button & select the corresponding HDMI input with the HDMI input from your DVD player. The HDMI inputs on the tv should be numbered & you can then select the correct number HDMI on the source screen. Good luck.

Can my internet connection be used to get tv programming on my insignia tv?

Yes if your video card supports output to TV. You can watch TV shows on the internet if you go to the site that plays them. So the only thing would be getting it to your TV. Check that your video card supports output to TV and if so you can stream it to your TV.

Tv comes on for about two min and then turns off, can not goto any devices just a blue screen, but will let you set up chanel guide

if this set has a slot in the back for a cable card---unplug the set and remove the card---it is for HD channels---if set works with card removed--get a new card---they get messed up by upgrades and other problems--if the cable card is causing the problem--set will work normal on non HD channels with it removed

Cant get digital channal on my DCP 501

From page 24 of the Installation Section

The clear protective film on the DCP501 display must be removed and transferred to the inside back cover of your
DCP501 Home Theater System User Guide. The Unit Address and Serial Number found on the protective film is
required for activation of your DCP501 cable TV receiver by your cable TV service provider.

On Page 28 -

Do not disconnect the cable connection between the RF In and To RF In ports. Removal of this
cable could disrupt operation of the DCP501.

IMPORTANT! The digital cable feature of your Motorola DCP501 can be activated only in
certain cable systems throughout North America. Contact your local cable TV provider to
determine whether the digital cable feature of your Motorola DCP501 can be activated. In cable
systems where the digital cable feature cannot be activated, you may connect an external cable
receiver provided by your local cable provider. For best results, connect an external cable
receiver through the audio and video inputs on the back of your DCP501.

Using DCP501 Cab le TV Functions
The DCP501 has an advanced CATV set-top terminal that allows you to view cable channels.
The DCP501 must be authorized for cable TV operation by your cable TV operator before it will
tune channels.
To use your DCP501 to view cable channels:
1 Press SOURCE to display C ATV on your TV. C A TV and the last channel tuned are displayed
on the DCP501 display.
2 Press MENU to display the TV program guide on your TV.
3 Press GUIDE to display the television program guide on your TV.
4 Change channels by pressing CHANNEL/PRESET or making your selection with the
program guide on your TV.
If you receive an electronic message from the cable operator, the message icon turns on.
You must use the TV program guide to retrieve an electronic message.
Additional DCP501 cable TV functions include CATV Record and CATV Channel Scan.

If you don't have the manual go to:
