I have a 13yr old above-range oven which quit when my wife cooked food in an aluminized foil wrapper (a small fire ensued!). This oven has 3 thermal protection units, on the magnetron, the chassis and on top of the food cavity. This last one had failed open, and since it's in series with the magnetron thermal protection unit and the main relay, nothing would work. MAT electronics sell the units for less than $4, but my problem now is to pick one with the appropriate temperature cut-off. They range from 200 to 300F.

It's usually a bad door switch or a broken door switch mount. Once in a while it's due to a board problem. It is located on the top of the chassis under the outer cover.
You will need to remove the oven from the wall and remove the outer cover to get to it.

parts site.

I had the same problem with my Sharp OTR microwave/convection oven. I had 2 service reps out to look at it (Sears and Lowes) they both said it was the magnatron and would cost about $500.oo to repair it. I called Waverly's Appliance in Paris, TN and it turned out to be a diode. Total cost of repair was $35.00 including service call.

and capacitors can br tested. The capacitor must bealloweddischarge
before testing, or you risk to get electrocuted, evenifpower is off.
Capacitors can get discharged by shorting theirtwocontacts.
Before replacing the magnetron test also the control board.
Replace the magnetron if the checks and all of the high voltage component tests are good, but the unit still does not heat.

Parts must be tested to find out what is wrong.
Remember that microwaves are potentially dangerous devices if not repaired properly, the job must be done by a competent person.
A microwave energy leakage test must always be performed when the oven is serviced for any reason.
