Oven sometimes doesn't heat up. Sometimes heats up to desired temp, then quits working. Sometimes doesn't even heat up at all. When preheated light comes on, thermometer in oven usually says about 100 degrees cooler than control dial.

This sounds like a weak igniter, it would have to be a gas oven and the symtoms usually are: takes longer than normal to ignite the burner, may or may not smell gas in the oven, does not maintain set temperature, eventually won't heat at all. On gas ovens, a glo igniter is like a light bulb, the more you cook, the faster it wears out. Bottom line, needs to be replaced. Good luck.

How to preheat oven

Hello, Cristina -

Since you have not stated the make and model of your oven, all I can advise is for you to turn your oven on and set it to the desired temperature and wait for 10 - 15 minutes until the oven comes up to the full heat temperature.

You can read the instructions here, if you wish:

Best wishes.

Oven Won't Heat To Desired Temp / Burner Quits Working Sometimes

The temperature sensor in the oven needs to be replaced. Here is the part to order. As far as the top element, lift the top up and look for lose or broken wires on the element. Keep me posted.

Oven appears to start, takes forever to preheat,

This is what I would do: I would unplug the range and connect my test cord to your range cord. I use an ammeter along with my test cord to read the amp draw of the bake ignitor. If it cannot get above 3.5 amps I know the ignitor is bad or weak. Since the oven is working that means there is a good circuit. In order for the safety bi-metal to open the amp draw must reach 3.5 amps or better. So to me I am thinking bad ignitor. To get to it I remove the door oven racks and bottom, I then remove the flame spreader and unplug the quick connect to the ignitor. I remove the burner and ignitor and replace the ignitor on a work bench. I am too old to be bending over and trying to do any parts replacement inside an oven. LOL. I have a training film which shows how the silicone carbide ignitor works HERE. Post a model number and I may have a service manual, do not forget to rate the answer.

My oven, model 38HN-6TVW won't preheat

I was unable to get the full model to come up. I was able to get a Magic chef range to come up. I would replace the control and oven thermostat.

Amana oven doesn't heat

IS it gas or electric? If it's gas, you may need to have a technician regulate the air and gas. If it's electric your t-stat may need to be replaced. Hope this helps! :>)!

My dacor oven model ECS130SBK is very slow to heat. Sometimes reaching the desired temp. after a long wait. Sometimes it never gets there.

I found the bottom element was not getting any power by using a volt/ohmmeter and a test method described elsewhere. (Shut off power, hold down COOK TIME while turning on power. then within 30 seconds press each mode you want to test and only that element/fan/etc will turn on. Cancels by itself after 30 sec.)

I traced the wire back to the relay (wire checked good) and there was no power getting through the relay although it clicked. Removed the relay board to replace it and found a cold solder joint on the "out" terminal with obvious past arcing carbon. Cleaned and soldered the pin and the oven now works normally.
WHY THE SLOW TO HEAT? The oven turns on all the elements to preheat faster and when it reaches your set temp it beeps and now only turns on the element you selected to maintain the temperature. (Bake or Convection) Our malfunctioning ovens would then cool since the element is not working properly and it must go back into preheat and keep cycling.
BY THE WAY- Don't ever use 4 hours on self clean it kills the boards and/or display. I also put a house fan in front of the oven and blow it into the lower grill to take away some of the heat on the two boards. Learned the hard way!
