How to check the toner level of Brother printer

I want to know how to check the toner level of Brother DCP-7040

  • Anonymous Jan 13, 2010

Thanks for your reply.. but have one question. You said it counts prints. Is this an internal count or can I see the number of prints somewhere?

A note: I also have a Canon printer. That one does show the amount of ink in the cartridge so I was use to that.

It has no accurate measure of the toner left, it is reset when you put in a fresh toner and just counts prints. The Brother shines a light thru a little window from right to left and when the toner is empty the light shines thru and it says it's empty.

Testimonial: "Right to the point. Thank you."

It's an internal counter, but if you press menu or reports button and scroll down to user settings and print that report it will tell you how many prints you have made and the life of the developer drum. It averages the toner usage based on the amount of toner for each print at about 25% coverage for each print.

Respectfully, I disagree with this answer.

I have a DCP 7040 and if you go into the menu, and find the "user settings" choice, and then print, it will give a half page report detailing the main menu setting choices, total pages printed, total pages copied and available ram. Below that will appear two bar graphs which show both the drum life and toner life and the percentages remaining. Hope this helps!
David.

Brother dcp 7040 prints and then prints too light

Before refilling, clean entire cartridge units. Remote its cleaning blade and clean it with an IP solutions and make sure no bends in cleaning blade. Do not mix new toner powder with old one. Also clean plastic portion below the developer roller also. Then the same complaint found, clean the LSU unit of the machine. Now it work properly.

With the computer off will the printer still make a copy? If the printer can still make a copy stand alone, then try deleteing the printer and reinstalling the printer driver.

Brother dcp 7040 prints grey film over the page

someone cheaped out and got the el cheapo paper.
The low quality paper has paper dust on every page....
when the printer feeds this cheap paper thru the machine it drops the dust onto the tonor cartridge rollers and causes the roller to accumulate toner on the roller... this in turn is transfered to the pages being printed.
check your machines operation manual. There may be a clean cycle you can try to run to clean the rollers...
I had to buy a new toner cartridge for mine when this happened.

Error message "put the black toner cartridge back in"

I got this same error message on a newly acquired Brother DCP-7040 that I purchased used off of ebay.

As I was troubleshooting this unit (that I bought untested off of ebay - hey gambling has paid off handsomely for me many times before!), this error message kept popping up.

I checked the COUNTERS (page & Drum life) and found out that the DRUM had 0% life left. BUT, the reason it showed ZERO was because this unit did not have any drum! The toner cartridge (TN-360) needs to sit WITHIN the drum (DR-360) on this DCP-7040 unit, as well as in models DCP-7030, MFC-7340, MFC-7345C, and MFC-7440N.

So perhaps some of these "put the black toner cartridge back in" problems could be related to the DRUM (or lack thereof). A possible tipoff (since the toner cartridge actually does slide into the unit much like other units that do not use Brother's DRUM carrier) seems to be the relative ease with which the toner cartridge slides into the DCP-7040 and really doesn't seem to "lock" into position real firmly.

Toner Life End message on DCP-7040

If your cartridge has a lever on the left side near the rear, it needs to be reset, and there's a lever inside on the left that can stick and cause that error. You need to wiggle and pull that lever until it moves freely again.

Brother Toner Refills

Yeah you can refill your cartridge. It is really easy and consists of removing the plug on the side of the cartridge, dumping out any old toner and dumping in the new toner. Its very easy. I have purchased refill kits from both of these sites in the past and its worked great:

www.tonerrefillstore.com

www.lasertekservices.com

They also have great customer service. I hope this helps!
